First thing you will need is a three volt power converter. Depending on the distance between your lights and the power supply you may find you will have to use ridiculously large wire. Wire the LEDs in parallel. You may have to wire a 300Ohm resistor in series with each LED to keep the brightness down and the life up.

What I would consider doing is making a larger Water proof battery boxes with three or four NiMh batteries wired in parallel (single battery lamps) then if there isn't enough sunlight to power the lamps through the night on one battery you can clip on the booster pack. You may have to recharge that pack one once every other week or so.

Remember to use NiMh batteries as they are more resistant to a phenomenon called memory effect. NiCad batteries are cheaper but you probably will end up with problems before too long. If your lights now have the NiCad batteries try swapping them out for the NiMh ones that may fix your problem.
