The Northeast RV and Canard Fly-in will take place two weeks from
tomorrow on June 30th (weather permitting) with a rain date of July
1st. The location is at Lawrence Municipal Airport (LWM) about 15 miles
north of Boston, MA. There will be 12 seminars and workshops covering a
wide range of topics. There are two seminars that will be of
particular interest to those afflicted with advanced Canardism. The
first is a seminar by John Slade (Cozy IV) entitled Rotary Engines, Why
and How. The second is a seminar by Steve Sorenson on Building and
Flying the Defiant. Following this, Bob LaBonte, who has a Subaru
powered Defiant, will join Steve for a discussion and comparison of
Subaru versus Lycoming power. It should be very interesting.

There will be lots of food and drink available, and PICs who fly their
RV or Canard to the event will eat breakfast and lunch for free. Check
out all the seminars and details at the June 30th Fly-in link at our web
site www.eaa106.org. I hope to see many of you there.

Joel........ Hard to believe the two topics are about engines as
opposed to airframes. If your members/fly in attendees were paying any
attention at all to Rutan, they would know his opinion of power options.
There is plenty of websites dedicated to the Rotary and the Subi....
Neither one of which is suitable for a Long EZ or especially a Defiant.
Real engines equal Real reliability and performance. The day might come
where this thinking is not absolute but it's not here yet. "Advanced
Canardism" should focus on airframes and flying as opposed to "engine
options" which are very unproven.

The 200/235 is still the best engine choice for Long-EZ
"purists" (like Burt). Some think a 320 or 360 is best.
Others think a Soob or a Mazda or a ROCKET MOTOR (!!) are
more appropriate. Experimental aviation == builder's
choice. Build what you're willing to test.

Given the price of AvGas and "real" engines these days, I
think alternative engines is a VERY appropriate topic of
conversation for homebuilders. I've followed the saga of
John Slade's rotary installation/operation and, if it
doesn't qualify as "Advanced Canardism", I'm not sure what will.

I'm thankful that these guys are willing to experiment and
(more important) share their "lessons learned" with those of
us who are sitting around waiting for the "status quo" to
advance past... oh... 1985.

Hi Weav. Only one of the seminars will have its main focus on an
alternative engine. Steve's talk is mainly on building and flying the
Defiant. Bob thought this would also be an good opportunity to have an
additional discussion and comparison on Subaru vs Lycoming power, and I
agreed. The Defiant is a good subject for this discussion since it has
both a tractor and a pusher installation. And how will we know when
these alternative engines have reached reliability and performance
acceptable to us if we don't have an opportunity to listen to these guys
and ask questions periodically to see how things are developing?

And while these engines are a long way from demonstrating the
reliability of certified engines, I don't think the situation is as bad
as you implied. I have spoken to two VariEze builders, one Cozy
builder, and two RV builders who use Subaru's and they are all
relatively happy with their Subaru installations, though some certainly
had more debugging to do than with certified engines.

Every year I put out a call for seminar topics for this fly-in. I will
be glad to try and obtain speakers for the topics that are of greatest
interest to attendees.

Joel... I hate to be that guy that pours saltwater on the
presentations...... And I mostly identify with Varieze's and Long
Ez's... The Defiant sorta provides a little leeway with respect to
engine failures given you have two of them. You guys are probably on the
right track. I just have a lot of hours in 0-200 ez's and 0-235/0-320
Long Ez's and have some personal viewpoints. Honestly, the 0-320 really
makes one helluva nice airplane out of a Long Ez. The 0-235 was great
for LONG distances but would really hug the ground for quite a ways when
loaded. The 0-360 is plenty of power but it doesn't buy much speed, only
rate of climb. Whatever and wherever the Subaru can fit in, good luck
to all. I like the Subaru engines.. Just don't know how they actually
work out in the aviation vein that you guys are trying to fit them in
on. I hope you are all successful with your installations and testing. I
just couldn't afford the time and money to allow for failure. So much
work to do behind that firewall.........
Thanks Joel,
Weav
