Dan,
I am getting ready to start my panel design and I am hearing conflicting
reports about the grand rapids EFIS. Do you know of people who are flying
this system, could you forward me their names so that I could get their
opinions. The alternative is Chelton, but I think that is just tooooo
expensive for an RV7. Thanks

By Dan I assume you might mean me, so I'm responding.

I know Walter Tondu is flying with a 2 or 3 screen GRT EFIS setup. I'm sure
he can comment on it, although I don't think he has much flight time on it
yet. I know there are lots of others flying with it, so you may want to
post to Doug's VAF Forums (http://www.vansairforce.net and click Forums).

What I've seen of the GRT engine monitor, I don't like. And the EFIS, while
it has a lot of functionality, has a pretty cheeseball screen. Paying
thousands and thousands of dollars for something like that didn't appeal to
me, personally. Everybody has an opinion! I obviously do! Wink

As far as Chelton goes, I don't understand why people put the megabucks into
those systems. Hangar queens with fancy EFIS systems and they never or
rarely travel. And they surely aren't pounding the IFR hours onto the
plane. Ok, I'm generalizing, but still. For a predominantly VFR airplane,
why the heck do you need all that crap? Another $10,000 to spare sure buys
an awful lot of avgas, tiedown fees, hotels, restaurants, rental cars, etc.

IMHO: Build your plane to be simple, functional, reliable, and SAFE. Then
fly the crap out of it and enjoy the view! Wink

For a lot of dialog by some GRT users you might want to sign up for

GRT_EFIS(at)yahoogroups.com (GRT_EFIS(at)yahoogroups.com)

and subscribe to the email.

LOTS of happy users and a few pretty pictures every now and then.

David,

Could you CC your comments/advice to me as well please?  I'm going GRT as I think it suits me better than the others.

I flew in an RV-8 after the owner installed two Chelton EFIS’s…..very impressive.  However, I have 200 hours on my GRT EFIS in my 7A and I’m not about to trade it in.  It is also impressive.  I have it coupled to my 430 and TruTrak Digiflight IIVSG.  I love the split screen capability on the GRT.  I can keep primary flight data on the left screen and a moving map on the right screen of the GRT EFIS.  When I am getting close to my destination, a switch on the panel lets me change the auto-pilot from GPS guidance to EFIS guidance.  Consequently, when ATC gives me a different heading and a descent during approach, I have to wake up and turn a knob on the EFIS to a different heading and dial in a minus 500 FPM on the TruTrak.  I know it takes all the “fun” out of hand flying the plane, but it sure makes single-pilot IMC a tad more comfortable.

To each his own.  It all boils down to what kind of flying you plan to do.  If VFR only, save your money and maybe go with the analog 6-pack steam gauges.  They still work good.  My personal choice is I want to fly IFR when necessary and don’t like vacuum pumps.  The GRT EFIS works for me.  I was convinced by 2 friends who are airline pilots and put it in their RV’s.
