While we all complain about the intrusion of all of the cell phone
towers, most everyone is more than ready to make use of the cell phone
service they provide with few exceptions.

Sad when you consider how obsolete this technology really is! There was
an individual who was advanced enough to promote the use of satellites
for this purpose and was actively pursuing funding to set up a network
of satellites to accomplish this. The big boy communication companies
saw this as a threat and undermined his ability to secure funding to do
so. They had their moneys already invested in a low tech solution that
we all have to deal with.

So here we are with a technology that will be replaced in the near
future with satellites and I guarantee you the towers will be left there
to rot as unsightly reminders of excess and still obstacles to air
navigation. But in the meantime they serve the never ending demands of
the current generation for mindless blabber's!! You as taxpayers will
ultimately be saddled with the bill to tear them down or watch them
collapse.

Remember when you use your cell phone they make it possible!!!!!!!!!

Isn't the me generation great!!!!!!!

I would gladly give up cell phones to eliminate the towers that clutter the
tops of otherwise beautiful mountains and ridges. I normally fly at
altitudes that are well above the tops of the towers so they are normally
not a problem to aviation. I just hate to see them appearing on top of
every ridge in sight.

No doubt we all will eventually be using some form of Sat. phones, but
at present there's no way to have enough bandwidth to achieve what you
mention. The reason there are so many towers is so that the same
frequencies at extremely low power can be used on every tower to allow
thousands to talk on the same freqs.

BTW, I agree with your general attitude about them. The only cell phone
we own is a prepaid model my wife carries for emergency use.

Unlit tower issue: you need to find the owner of the tower (likely not
the cell company). Most are pretty sensitive to safety issues because of
liability. If there's one near an airport that's registered with the
FAA, mentioning it to them might well get a response even if they
aren't required to do anything.

jest a few cents worth. if ya think ya gotta problem now, just wait. the
mindless powers that be back in the clinton admin, signed into law the
ability or the probability of the hd tv towers. yep, those can go up higher
than two grand spaced where-ever they want. hd digital needs line of sight
transmission and will replace free tv -- ooops, analog tv transmissions. ya
see, the big boys want to rope us into paying for MANDATORY hd digital
whether we want or need it. clintons baby it is. line of sight doesnt mean
a KOLBS line of sight, but transmission wise. that means we gonna have
towers everywhere and this is a good thing for them cause we HAVE to pay to
use them or forget tv. us with sats will already be in the loop but we
still gonna have to watch our eyes off for unlit, new and old towers. good
thing our Kolbs really fly well cause we gonna have to yank and bank to keep
away from them when they strart growing which I understand will be mandatory
tv transmissions by 08. wonder if anyone ever gave thought to the use of
our emergency broadcast system which works analog in rain, wind, storms,
supposedly bombs. wont work in line of sight when a little rain blanks you
out. our government, the eighth wonder of the world! Keep your eyes
rolling and your heads a spinnin cause we gonna have wild ride some times.

Look at the bright side, now we'll have slalom flying. Maybe become a
competition
event. Good for pylon turns too.
Seriously, my first tightened sphincter reaction from one of them was
about 1994
and I hadn't done much flying for a spell. I was up doing happy low
level
circles in the air and one of those freshly sprouted things came into
view.
That put a damper on my cheery mood. But a real wake up call too.

Now Ted, that really scares me and I'm sure when MZ. Clinton wins election
two terms out (cause, well we seem to forget the past only weeks ago, and
she seems so sincere), she will be able to mount the additional "big
brother" cameras on each one of them as an added bonus to the tax payers.
After all, the new by-line will be "why do you worry, are you doing
something illegal?". They got this far protecting us from ourselves. I'l bet
Pat's (Ladd) having a blast reading about our simple suffering, since in
England they don't have any traditional rights left. Hey Pat, were not far
behind.

Do not archive.. they have enough information on me already!

Charlie, Terry, you're right on!
The present cell trechnology is obsolete, but it works (sort of) so
everyone keeps it and uses it.
I don't think it will be too long before the MESH system or
something similar, replaces the cells. But the towers won't be torn
down --they'll be rented out as antenna platforms for business radio
and other stuff. One of the ones in Westchester County has had green
fiberglass branches added to it -- for purely cosmetic reasons. I
have to admit it looks better --
If a cell tower is a danger to you, you're flying pretty low! --
might be good to get a little more altitude.

I used to play a pretty mean pin ball game but in a plane, not! The area I'm
taking my lessons in has tower farms, power company transmission main line
trunks, little cell towers and a few AM and FM high towers. Add to that the
telephone wires, local power comp wires, cable comp wires and assorted
"unknown" wires and then put on the new and improved HD TV towers Ted Cowan
was talking about and only in 2008 and we will all need more powerful
engines to get us out of the jams. I remember back when I was hot and heavy
into Astronomy. I had an observatory dome in my back yard, same place I live
now. Traffic lights, street lights town lights, home lights were minimal and
the southern sky's were a great view. Now 15-18 years later I can barely see
the moon, because of all the lighting. What price we pay for progress. Oh
well we will continue to adapt our ways to fit our needs in order to
continue our loves.

Please gents, spare the partisan politicking. If the present prez were such
a wunderkind, he would repeal all these 'onerous' regs. IMO, he's the worst
prez ever, but you don't hear me whining ad nauseum about it (til it gets
unbearable like now). Is it me, or has the tower thread pony been flailed
enough?

The sad thing is, the core issue isn't 'partisan'. There are astounding
parallels between the Johnson administration in the '60s & the current
administration. Bottom line: you can *never* trust *any* government, as
our founding fathers clearly understood but we have forgotten.

You don't have to wait for Ms Clinton for your fears of privacy invasion
to be realized. The current one (or at least their computers) is
listening to all of our phone calls now (read up on the NSA controversy
& understand what's between the lines), they have gathered info on tens
of thousands of Americans without warrants using 'national security
letters' (does anyone believe that there are tens of thousands of
Americans in this country who are terrorists?), the FBI paid visits to
members of antiwar groups prior to the last Republican convention &
tried to intimidate them into staying away, the FCC is floating a
proposal right now to require all handlers of data, meaning internet
providers, phone companies, etc, to provide a 'back door' into all their
switches & routers so that the Justice Dept can eavesdrop at will, etc
etc etc.

Be afraid. Be Very Afraid.

In the immortal words of one of my positing predecessors: " If ya don't like
something on the web, its your right as a free citizen to turn another
channel". Now if you look how this site is laid out, you will quickly note
(or perhaps not) that it is entitled 'blinking and flashing flashing and
blinking". If you also note it is about towers. If you don't want to read
about towers or blinking and flashing, do not click on any of the messages!
That's what's referred to as "democracy" not be associated in any way with
democrats! And if you don't like a political pun, ignore it. I've had to for
both trips of your man(?). Now go fly or something. And "ONE post" about a
family member of a x-pres does not make a wining thread, typical demo##$%#%!

Gentlemen, you are bringing to truth a message one of our founding fathers spoke. Soon after the Declaration of Independance was written, Thomas Jefferson was asked, what sort of government have you given us? His reply, "A Republic, If you can keep it"... somber thoughts, for those that think.

Hi,
not quite right but we are getting there. A bad week this week. Legislation
was passed for the introduction of ID Cards. I am against them because a)
what I do is nobody elses business, and certainly not the Governments, b) it
has been sold as an anti terrorist measure. Do they think terrorists wont
get a fake ID Card? Just the same pack of lies that Bush and Blair used to
start the `oil war`. c) it is supposed to stop people falsely drawing
various entitlements, unemployment pay etc.,. Wanna bet?. d) the company
which will run the computer program to back all this up has already failed
to implement about 3 previous programs for the Government. e) it will cost
billions and give employment to thousands just to keep every birth, death,
address change, immigration, emmigration etc., up to date.
f) it reduces us to nothing better than some damned Frenchman or other
European lowlife where any jumped up little `flic` can stop you in the
street and demand `your papers`.
What did we fight the war for?

For all you (and me) old fogies out there. If the print is too small to read
follow the below. I couldn't believe it. I thought someone was sending me a
joke. NOT!

Really works. Don't say you didn't learn something from Ralph of Ohio.

I just found this out and thought I'd pass it on. It's very useful when
trying to read small print (especially in the early hours). If you hold
down the Ctrl key on your key board and then turn the small wheel in the
middle of your mouse away from you or towards you, the print size will
change - it will either get larger or smaller - depending on which way you
turn the wheel
