A friend of mine, restoring a B model Bonanza, split his nose bowl horizontally at the bottom of the Air inlets. He then fabricated a strong system that reattaches it. This way he could get the engine in and out easier.
Having said that he is about the best mechanic I know. He has the engineering data worked up and has been told that approval should be no problem. It added a small amout of weight.

Good Morning Steve,

It appears that your friend is reinventing the wheel!

Beech splits the nose bowl cowl on their factory turbocharged airplanes for the same reason. They do it about in the middle of the bug eyes. I would tend to duplicate what Beech has done if I wanted to split mine.

The nosebowl on my V35B has a center section that is riveted to the remainder using doubler plates. I think this is probably the same on all models with the IO-520 engine. It would be quite easy to drill out the rivets, which would allow lifting the engine almost straight upwards instead of the extreme tilting that is now required. The rivets could be replaced with nutplates and screws which would allow for future removal of the top nosebowl piece. This is how the T-34 nosebowl is built if I'm not mistaken. Of course this would require a field approval and 337 form as this probably goes beyond what constitutes a minor modification. I'm really surprised that someone has not obtained a multiple STC for this modification.

Good Afternoon Cliff,

Sounds like you have one of the old style nose bowls that were modified at the factory to accommodate the canted engine starting with the S35.

Once they ran out of the old ones, that upper section was no longer used and the nose bowl was once again a one piece item with the exception I mentioned earlier. In those factory turbocharged airplanes, they split the nose bowl on each side about half way from the top to the bottom of the air inlets. The flange was riveted to one half and screwed to the other to provide easy removal for engine changes..

Once again, why reinvent the wheel?

Hi Bob,

What is your opinion then of modifying the nose bowl to use nut-plates for easy removal like the factory? Couldn't that be a minor modification?

Hi Cliff,

I think I would consider doing it as a minor alteration on my own airplane, but I am not so sure I would want to send one out of the shop that way.

There are some fights I don't mind fighting and others where I would sooner not compete!

Gotta think on that one some more.

That's pretty much the way I feel about it. I just thought that if the factory did that very thing on essentially the same model plane and part (with the IO-520 engine), you could reason (and argue if need be) that it was a minor mod.

Thanks for your input.

OK, OK When I called my buddy up he told me that he modeled his mod on the later model. Said it sure made it easier putting the engine in.

I thot this list was dead. Take a little trip to the middle east and a lot of things change. Where else are Bonanza discussions going on?

I just moved mine to Boerne Stage Airport NW of San Antonio. Waiting on a hanger.
