Hello,

I have been thinking about this for a while and I think I should have purchased a 6 instead of a 6/A. I am about 85% done with my 6/A and have been thinking about where I am going to base this aircraft. With the hangar rents going through the roof I think I want to base it at a local grass strip. So my concern is that the nosewheel / engine mount assy, like most tri gear aircraft is not up to the task of a soft field use. My question is: Has anybody converted a 6/A to a 6? Can it be done? How difficult is it? What do you need to modify or change? Any feedback would greatly be appreciated!

Thank you!

Chuck

Chuck, If you have a smooth grass strip I wouldn't concern myself on basing the RV6-A there. I fly mine in and out of well maintained grass strips and find proper technique is whats key.
1) Keep the stick back as much as possible and land it as if it were a tail dragger.......on the mains.
2) Once the nose wheel touches during roll out apply slow steady back pressure to keep the nose weight as light as you can without pulling
it off the turf.
3) A good instructor would recommend this technique when fling out of grass strips regardless of the brand of nose dragger. KEEP the Nose
Wheel LIGHT!

Reasons in my mind to keep the RV6-A approach?
1) Lower insurance rates.
2) Bigger market if you sell.
3) IF....You are a low time pilot the RV6-A will allow you to fly on more days with high winds.
By now you have probably guessed I won't be updating my nose wheel assembly. The present gear is fine WHEN used with proper technique.

Hi Chuck,

Lots of people have done this, even Van’s. You could give them a call and get the specifics on what you would need to change. I agree with Tom though that finishing your 6A might not be a bad plan. Almost all the factory demo flights were flown off grass in the past…

Chuck,
Back in 93 when I started building, I purchased a 6. Along about the time I finished the tail feathers I completed tail dragger training and got a tail wheel endorsement. After accumulating 45 hrs. of conventional gear flying in Champs I decided I would rather have a nose dragger and bypass the additional aggravation during ground operations ;-}.
Anyway when the 6A was finished I had a short rudder. When you order a RV6 kit from Van the rudder comes short for tail spring clearance. If you built a tail for a 6A, you could have some interferance. As far as I can tell that is the only differance which you might need to be concerned about. Incidentally, my home field is turf and I haven't had any trouble in 3 years.

Chuck - I'd convert it.

The nosegear strut is the weak point in the a/c. I had one collapse on me, and have also had two occasions of severe shimmying, requiring mainentance.

Vans may test on grass, but- duh - one assumes the turf is dry, solid, and in good shape.

For an aircraft like this, you don't need a training wheel!

Chuck, I have an RV6 under construction and am planning on changing it
to a 6A. Per Van all that is needed is to change the engine mount and
gear. I have the mount and gear. Perhaps we could swap.
If you have any interest please email me directly.

I believe that Chuck would need to change his rear bulkhead to mount the
tailwheel...

If Chuck hasn't ordered his fuselage kit yet...the 6A fuselage comes with
the proper rear bulkhead changes.
