concerning the Buzzer maintance you have to re-adjust it properly evry 50hrs or so; best done on a bench with a Multimeter and a stabilized Voltage of 24V!
This is a bit tricky to do on the plane.
I take my buzzer out, dismount the contacts, clean them thouroughly with a file (no holes, craters etc), reassemble and then adjust the gap to the correct Amp. value (max 1,0Ah).
Take care when re-mounting the spring-contact that both contacts are 100% aligned and parallel to each other!

Adjusting the gap is done the following way:
* you need a 24V transformer (best with selective Amps) and an Multimeter to read Amp
* put +24V on contact 3 or 1 and ground on contact 2 or 4
* have your Multimeter set to measure Ah (0-5Ah) and connected into the circuit
* set your transformer to 24V and limit to max 2,0Ah!
* turn on the transformer with 24V and check the Ah (do not let it on more than 20sec, otherwise the buzzer will get too hot!)
=> the correct Ah should be 1.0Ah (+/-0.2Ah)!
* to achieve the correct 1.0 A-setting, you have to bent very slightly the moving part of the spring-contact with a small plier!
=> bending the spring in direction of the fixed contact will increase the Ah
=> bending the spring away from the fixed contact will reduce the Ah

Hope this helps!

Hello Bob,

Sorry it took awhile for me to post. I did not have a chance to get to the airport
until today.

My SlickStart is Model# SS1001 series A. Believe it or not, it is installed exactly
like the starter vibrator. My aircraft is setup a little different than most,
I have a separate mag switch, starter switch and an ignition boost button,
just like allot of antique radial powered aircraft.

The SlickSTART has 5 connections on it, 1, 2, 3, VIN, GND. The posts marked 2
and 3 have no connections.

The VIN post receives voltage from my starter switch positive solenoid contact,
this is wired thru my ignition boost switch. Voltage into the SlickSTART should
only be applied when the starter is engaged, my install takes it a step further
and only allows voltage in when the starter is engaged and the ignition boost
button is held in.

The GND post is wired to my magneto switch external ground post.

Post #1 has 3 wires attached to it. A heavy one going to the R/H magneto P-lead,
and two light gage wires going into my Mag switch. I have to do more research
into my mag switch install. There is a connector on the back with six wires
going internally into the switch, 2 of the wires are from the SlickStart number
1 post and I don't know what any of them do. Unfortunately it is very hard to
get at, I have to stand on my head in the rear cockpit (open cockpit biplane)
and work WAY up under the panel. I will try to gather more info and post.

Unison Industries has published a service letter on the different ways to install
the SlickSTART box, it is number SL2-96 and gives some incite into the different
ignition boost systems. Th standard LOM system is very similar to the "install
to replace starting vibrators that do not include a relay" system.

Luke - thank you very much - this is of great help. the only problem now is
that they are indefinite back order from Unisom according the A/C spruce. So
- guess I'll button her up now that I have the buzzer working and wait til
the slick start shows up and put it in with the great information you have
given me.

I'll let you know how it goes.

thanks again and Merry Christmas

Bob,
What did you find wrong with the buzzer? Just need the points cleaned?
So far, so good with mine - 40 hours plus quite a number of run-ups.

Actually, the points were clean, but must have been a couple thousandths
apart cause when I check across them, they were not contacting "at rest" -
so according to the engine manual, you just bend it slightly so it touches
the grounding post - then the ohmeter dropped to nothing. I have about 90
hrs on my LOM engine. It is part of the annual check which I had done to
clean them - I just didn't actually check the ohmeter til it was obvious
there was not spark to start it with. after adjusting, it started fine.

The slick starts will be shipping again soon according to Unisom who makes
them. Till then I will use the buzzer; but look forward to quicker starts
and less cranking.
