Hi Duane,
I believe that there were 2 and maybe 3 failures of
the old jack screw. I have pictures at home of one
plane before and after it broke. It was a beautiful
plane that got bent sideways plus other damage when
the jack screw broke loose just before landing and it
hit hard. The jack screw broke at the bottom mount.
This was the old jack screw where the motor was
parallel to the jack screw. The newer and stronger
ones have the motor at 90 degrees. I still added a
backup safety mount on the bottom of mine and so did
some others.
The wound spring trim indicator that came with mine
was terriblly inaccurate. It would not show any
movement for the first 25% of travel in either
direction. I bought a rheostat and linear meter from
radio Shack and made a system where the stab rotates
the rheostat and the meter reads its position in the
cockpit. Works fine for me. Some people just use a
takeoff reference line on the tail and a mirror in the
cockpit to line it up. Pretty easy and fool proof.
Mine does not trim below about 60 knots unless I carry
baggage. John McBs flap/trim fix may be in the works
for me after I tweek a few other things.
I might have to add the correction for the sensitivity
in cruise too. So far I have been beeping in trim and
immediately beeping in reverse to get a fine
adjustment. It may take several up/down tries to get
it set right.
Overall I like the electric trim fine on my S-5. It
just needs a little tweeking to make it work perfectly
and to keep it operating safely.
