Does anyone know the legalities is drilled brake rotors, I weighed the
individual
rotor yesterday, and feel 2 pounds per rotor is a tad on the heavy side.
Having run
drilled stainless rotors for racing I feel a good weight saving could be
made here

Hi Craig

"Does anyone know the legalities is drilled brake rotors"

Can't tell you the legalities, but can tell you that there are an
incredible number of holes needed to reduce weight, all of which need to
be deburred on both sides.

I built a custom motorcycle where I shoehorned a YTZ 250 motor into a YZ
80 frame (under 200 pounds with 65HP). I installed the disk brakes from
the 450 pound beast but the rear rotor was not drilled. It happened to be
same diameter as the front so I clamped together and transfer punched
drill marks. Hours and hours and hours drilled on that rotor, then figured
out there are 2 sides that need deburring! Looks pretty, I forget the
exact weight savings but it was not as much as I would have liked for the
amount of work invested.

Supposedly helps with cooling. Good chance after you completed task, you
would have hit on the perfect harmonics where each flight would yield a
slight different "whistle"!

Fooling aside, worth it to make a drill template so others can do the deed
to their rotor. Very kool (cool) the increasing distance between drill
marks swirl instead of in line registration as diameter increases.

Can't answer that, but have you any info on the grade and hardness of the
stainless material used?

Not sure of the grade or hardness, but I intend to try and find out, we just
used to
buy them and bolt them on, they did turn blue occasionally if you really
gave them a
hard time, but I couldnt see them getting anywhere near the same punishment
when
on an aircraft, as speed will generally be a lot lower and weight is only up
about 100kg
and its normally only one big stop and your done

They look great Karel

good weight saving too, complete wheel and brake for 4.25 pounds
instead of 6.6 pounds for just the wheel, will have to save up
my pennies and buy a set.

Craig,
In which case a softer grade with better "grip" (stainless is not as good as
cast iron in this respect) may suffice for us.

Any idea what grade of stainless the normal aircraft disc substitutes are
made of?

I've tried without success to find out.

Duncan,

I had stainless discs on my ARV - they don't last very long - too soft.

There was a company in the US who supplied stainless disks for EZs
Unfortunately I don't know the grade but they were superb. The surface
was dark grey, some sort of treatment.
They used to sell through ACS as a replacemnet for the awful Cleveland
disks but I haven't seen them advertised for many years
