Reason I asked was I had a set of points fail at 41 hours. The point arm itself broke in half. They sent a set of points, tools, goodies, etc. out overnight. Seemed they knew something was up.

i have spent three days doing inspections and talking to others that have done it. so far after speaking with twenty shops i have a confirmation of thirty mags failing, the problem with slicks is if they fail you pull them and send them in for exchange, nobody takes them apart. unison is not reporting these as failures. and most of the shops are not either. myself included. the chicago aco claims that there are only 29 incidents of these mags failing this way. i would like to know how many of those are slick taking apart their returned mags. i would bet zero .the aco engineer that is reponsible for slick told me " but you have two mags so what is the problem" the problem is that if both mags are high time you replace both of them. and most of us fly low for the hundred dollar burger. but when we want to go some where like oskosh we have to fly over mountains. and then the carbon problem will take out both mags at the same time. the next shall i say "bitch", is that the have refused to recall any of the mags out there even though they have a fix inplace for sb2-08 cam problem. this includes distributor stock. so you have to check any new mag to check if sb2-08 applies. is slick paying any money for these inspections/repairs, no! unison stand up and admit that you have a problem. faa issue an ad for the inspection. ad should not mean another death but i will guarenty, we will have a death from this durring the oskosh season just due to the altitudes involved. by the way the engineer that is responsible for this product is not a pilot, i wonder what would happen if he actually flew with the product i question. or if his family flew.

Good points. I suggest before anyone takes a trip with possible altitudes above their normal. Do a test flight before hand, at or above the trip altitude. Or be extra ready in case of double failure. I have one slick and one electronic. One of my (not so) slick’s from year 2000 died at 500 hrs. The other is still fine at 1060 hrs. I had a 1974 slick with 2500 hrs as of 1992 (times change).
Good luck to all and be careful,

We're surely graduating more business types than engineers these days due to the wage gap. Engineering used to be a valued profession and American Industry WAS the best in the world. Nowadays, not so much.

mags will fail at altitude due to the lower pressure around the distributor block. that is why high flying pistons have pressurized mags from the turbos. the lower density of the air allows for a more ready ionization and therefore allowing for a carbon track jump. we have a problem with high performance singles that normally fly at ten or better that are not boosted. the mags will arc. and any lower performance aircraft that has to climb the hills will have the same problem. massive electro's are a contributing factor. to fly high pressurize the mag, next fine wire, the slick problem will become a serious problem when we have 2000 aircraft trying to cross the hills. mags that won't cross fire when they are at 4000 feet for the hundred dollar hamburger, will cross fire at 10,000, when you are trying to get across the hills to go to Oshkosh, with no place to land. i have spent about sixty hours so far with this problem, if you are going over the hills you need to do the inspection. without tear down you have no idea what the condition is, failures have been documented from five hours to 450 hrs. i count any failure after 500 hrs as owner stupidity. a slick should be pulled at five hundred hours period. look at the may faa maintenance report i think #358 for a twin mag failure at 450 hrs on cirrus. if that does not tell you we have a problem then i don't know what will.

Good points. I suggest before anyone takes a trip with possible altitudes above their normal. Do a test flight before hand, at or above the trip altitude. Or be extra ready in case of double failure. I have one slick and one electronic. One of my (not so) slicks from year 2000 died at 500 hrs. The other is still fine at 1060 hrs. I had a 1974 slick with 2500 hrs as of 1992 (times change).
Good luck to all and be careful,

i have spent three days doing inspections and talking to others that have done it. so far after speaking with twenty shops i have a confirmation of thirty mags failing, the problem with slicks is if they fail you pull them and send them in for exchange, nobody takes them apart. unison is not reporting these as failures. and most of the shops are not either. myself included. the chicago aco claims that there are only 29 incidents of these mags failing this way. i would like to know how many of those are slick taking apart their returned mags. i would bet zero .the aco engineer that is reponsible for slick told me " but you have two mags so what is the problem" the problem is that if both mags are high time you replace both of them. and most of us fly low for the hundred dollar burger. but when we want to go some where like oskosh we have to fly over mountains. and then the carbon problem will take out both mags at the same time. the next shall i say "bitch", is that the have refused to recall any of the mags out there even though they have a fix inplace for sb2-08 cam problem. this includes distributor stock. so you have to check any new mag to check if sb2-08 applies. is slick paying any money for these inspections/repairs, no! unison stand up and admit that you have a problem. faa issue an ad for the inspection. ad should not mean another death but i will guarenty, we will have a death from this durring the oskosh season just due to the altitudes involved. by the way the engineer that is responsible for this product is not a pilot, i wonder what would happen if he actually flew with the product i question. or if his family flew.

HI All-

This slick mag debacle doesn't affect me directly, but something occurs to
me that might be of use. A couple of you have written very good and
insightful notes on this subject. Suppose you sent them to Aviation
Consumer, their sister mx rag, Flying, AOPA Pilot, Kitplanes, et al as Op
Ed pieces. That way, the issue will be out in the open pre-Oshkosh. Well,
as I type this, it occurs to me that none of them will get into print by
the time OSH comes around, except perhaps via Barnstormers and AvWeb. In
any case, you guys could document the situation in public prior to the
event. If anything happens enr to or fro the convention, your concerns
will have been registered before hand. Hopefully, this situation will
trigger a pre-emptive action on slick's part. If not, your efforts will no
doubt be of great assistance to anyone going to court.

Just a thought-

hi all
the a saga continues,my favorite 206 now has had three inflight mag failures in the last 100hrs. and two more mags where condemded on the ground due to the service bulletin inspections.

the full story is as follows
with about 400 hrs on the mags owner complains about high egt on climb out. the old shop fiddle with the fuel system on the io-520 for the next hundred hours and finally send everything out for rebuild. after a very large check later and the annual the mags have 510 on them. shop advises that the mags are due the 500 hr inspection but every thing is fine. owner leaves bay area and loses both mags at bakersfield, note here is that the always passed mag check and damn near did not get in. total time on mags 520. but they had been the high egt problem for the last 100 hrs, as it went away with new mags. next in flight r/h mag burns up distributor block at 84 hrs. next at 90 hr perform sb inspection find both brushes bad and the brand new r/h mag has an inproperly built coil or casing will not pass clearance specs. so in the last hundred hrs, less then one year of flight, five bad mags. and you wonder why the owner is a tad bit miffed. not counting the fuel system overhaul that he was billed for, and did not need. that may be why i have to drive two hrs to work on this bird. by the way unison is aware of thier quality control problems but have yet to admit to them. the bad coils and or casings are reflected in sb3-08 look at the tab height inspection. bad unison bad unison, you should all be spanked for this crap.

Now that's gotta be consumer abuse!!! Seriously, the only way Unison will admit to a problem is if the FAA gets involved.
If the A&Ps file their discrepancy reports like they should, the FAA takes notice. Filing a NASA form probably won't hurt either.

Rick.....I have to ask......why do you keep unloading all this stuff on
us?? I think you have made it clear you are disgusted with Slick. Wink

It's not like we as RV builders can cure the problem that Unison has
with Slick mags......

Respectfully,

sam
how many of us are flying with slicks? alot. how many of us did not know that a mag that passed mag checks would cause high egts while failing.? not many. durring this disaster if have talked to cont, lyc, cpa, unison, faa local fsdo, the aco repsonsible chicago, and faa aco head washington.

responses:
cont
this is a major problem, critical service bulletin, they are adding a second shift to the bendix line.
lyc
this is a major problem, critical service bulletin
cpa
this is a major problem, replace brush with pma from aero accessory 1800-822-3200 no problems. note this does not solve the other problems. bad coils, cases and cams.
unison
we know about the problem, yes there is a problem with manufacturing tolerances, no this is not a defect,"hey right" we will not have a good brush design ready untill augest and are redoing tolling and inspection proceedures.. yes we will continue to ship old stock with the problem, and no recalls are in the works

faa local fsdo
call the aco, lots of help there

aco chicago
we dont see a serious problem and "you have two mags anyways"

washington aco
showed some concern waiting for reponse. they where a little concren about the "you have two mags anyways" line but i question if that was only pr

how many of of us comply with service bulletins, the average feeling is that the faa will issue an ad if there is a real problem. remember ad stands for "after death". if this had happened to a chevy 20 million cars would already be recalled. the service bulletins are required for only one percent of the fleet. but what about the rest. that is why i write this. and if it bothers you sooooooooo much, delete it.
