				Hey all -

Just thought I'd give a bit of a pirep here. I know it's been
discussed before, but the Voyager flight planning software from
Seattle Avionics is WAAAY COOL. I downloaded the "Freeflight"
version and activated the trial of the more comprehensive features,
and I'm sold. It made planning a kind of tough flight much easier.
The weather tools are exceptional, and in no time I was happily
planning away. The little video tutorials are invaluable to get
started, and once you get the hang of it, it's great. Scott from
Seattle avionics actually called and chatted with me about the
software, and was really helpful as well. BTW, I'm also using it on
a Mac running Parallels, and it runs perfectly.

Also, I thought I'd bring up another thing. I'm a bit of a gadget
nut, and I've picked up a couple cool weather and flight planning
tools along the way here, and I'm just really happy to be flying in
this age where you have the tools to really know what the weather is
doing everywhere. It's come a long way even from when I started
flying just 4 years ago. I've had the experience of sitting in a
cessna cockpit at night on some lonely airfield on the phone with
flight service trying to find a way to get home (or close to it) when
everywhere around seemed to be below approach minimums. I just felt
blind and dumb. Now, I've got excellent weather tools on my Iphone
that allow me to have an pretty good understanding of the big
picture. Couple that with datalink weather in the cockpit on an EFIS
or handheld, and you're even better informed. Add to that the flight
planning weather tools in most of the software available, and you
really get a clear view. The last and I think most important part of
all of this is to have a really clear definition of your personal
minimums, both for IFR and VFR flying, and stick to them when making
the "go, no-go" decision. I've made mistakes on this last part a
couple times, and the best thing I can say about that is that I
learned from them. I'm rambling a bit now, so I'll sign off!

also - a belated happy new year to everyone!

For free flight planning software, IMHO, Golden Eagle Flight Prep SE
gives you more and uses less computer resources. Haven't compared the
pay services, because that would invalidate my CSOB status.

I used Golden Eagle Flight Prep for a long long time before
switching to Voyager. You're right, it is excellent. No issue
there. It does you less computer resources too. I don't think I
can say anymore that it "gives you more", because there are so many
things that Voyager does that G.E. doesn't, but Golden Eagle is
certainly great software. I had G.E. + Chart Case Express and one
of the disappointments if you go to a full in-flight + preflight
system is that those 2 functions were very separate. If you are
looking at their products for both purposes, you may want to go
with one of the higher ones that combines the functions. With
Voyager that's what I did, bought the EFB level so it was all
integrated. Voyager beats flightprep and their related stuff
hands down though for number of feature.

Also, Chris is right, on numerous occasions I've written Seattle
Avionics an email about something I wanted to learn, or report
something when I was beta testing 4.0, and it was surprising that
you really got attention and response right away.

Chris, I'd love to hear what you use on your iPhone, too. Scott
has such a great time with his iPhone that I got myself an
ipod Touch + EVDO data service on my cell + a Cradlepoint PHS300
wireless hotspot. Now, although cheaper and more widely-useful
for other people and devices, I have WiFi almost anywhere if I
need it, and I find myself using my iPod for more and more things
while on a flying trip. Awesome stuff. Would be cool if Voyager
decided to do some integrated flight planning for the iphone.

yup. Foreflight is the best app for the Iphone that I've found so far. it's a one-time cost of about $75 for the app, no subscription fees or anything. It does weather, AF/D, and tons of other stuff.

I use it constantly. There are some cheaper apps that work ok too, but this one is the slickest and most useful.

Man, what a sucker I am for a good geek toy. Because of your
two comments Chris and Lenny, I'm now $75 poorer.
I trust you guys and so took the plunge. I'll have to do
a write-up someday once I get familiar. I just looooovve geek
 toys.

				Tim,

You have no cause for gripe on this one! Because of you I am about $1500 and counting poorer for a motion tablet, voyager software, and bluetooth gps receiver.

HA!!!!!!!!! You guys are hillarious! I think you'll
like the tablet. It sure beats buying and swapping all
the paper charts you would want. If someone had tons of
funds, I'd buy the fastest hardware I could get, but
it works ok for what it does.

I'm still laughing at Bob's post too about the CF card.
It works pretty good in the tablet. I'm just glad I got
a 32GB iPod Touch, because it was half full (or is that
half empty?) before I got ForeFlight. Can't wait to
 see how it works though.

On a more serious note, one thing about Voyager, as with
any radio/gps or other technical item, you will be more
and more pleased with it the more you actually use it.
Most complex user-interface items get frustrating as you
first learn them, until you find either A) the proper
way to use them, or B) the way that works best for your
needs. I say this because things like pulling up approaches,
getting airport info, and things like that can be done
multiple ways on that software, and some are easier
than others. So, just as with flying the plane, invest
the proper time into "education" and you'll be much
 happier.
