Question for scratch builders or anyone with the knowledge.
I made a mistake on my nose ribs. On 6-W-5 it shows NR1, 2, an 3 have a 8 mm cutout to allow clearance of the main spar caps. Rib 4 to 7 are should not have that. I failed to notice this when I cut my rib blanks or even after forming them. Did anyone else make this mistake, and how important is the extra top and bottom rivet connecting the rib to the nose rib angle? Is it possible to still use the ribs, and maintain the structure? Or would I be better off making new ones?

Thanks,
Derek Lewis

Hi Derek,
It would seem that either new ribs or nose rib angles would have to be
made to allow the extra rivets to do their work.

I made the same mistake and used AC 43-13-1b to make an acceptable repair. I had both my EAA tech Counselor and my local AI check the repairs. I was quite worried before I had them over and see the repairs. The Tech Counselor even wrote me a letter to the FAA stating my work was good and my main concern was safety.

You can see what I did on rear rib 9 here:

Also many of the lower rib flanges were going to have short edge distance on the first rivet back from the main spar flange. I added an L-angle to give the rivet more holding power.

I jumped to confusion there, mine were the rear ribs, not the nose ribs.

Hope that helps,

I made the same mistake. I made a bigger L angle to attach the nose rib to the spar, one with twice as much flange at top and bottom on the side that attach to the nose rib. In that way I can rivet all the way from top to bottom and closing the spar cap cutout
