After the AZ sun heats up my glare shield, my Dynon EFIS sometimes indicates it’s overheated.
I bought a thin computer fan to install figuring it would be both a defrost fan as well as remove
heat from under the shield. It’s 12 V and has 3 wires attached: red, black, and yellow. Are any
of you computer knowledgeable enough to tell me which wire does what. I want to hook it up to
 an on-off switch to 12 V.

				Albert,
As a data point I purchased an 2 ultra high velocity computer fans to act as you describes, heat removal & defrost. They had something like 3 times the airflow as normal computer fans and are a bit louder. After installing them I am surprised how much less air flow is blown through then than I expected. I can only imagine if I had used a standard fan the disappointment I would feel. I have yet to need the fans for defrost but I am glad I upgraded.
www.NewEgg.com rates them by CFM & dBA

 Average Case Fan ~ 20-40 CFM $5.00
High Volume Fans ~70-90 CFM $8.00
Ultra High Volume ~100-120 CFM $10-20.00
 WOW                          175 CFM $35.00
Ridicules                   217 CFM $42.00 (note 120 MM may be too big)

Don’t be surprised if you own 35 CFM fan.

I did the same on my glareshield. I originally installed the fan as only a defrost fan, however, last weekend I had to turn it on to keep the temperature down on my EFIS units. I connected the black wire to ground and the red wire to +12V. I switched the +12V power. I snipped and shrink wrapped the yellow wire. You can experiment with a 12V battery to confirm that is the correct wiring.

				Albert,

My Dynon was doing the same thing, here in cool NorCal.  Eventually it would just go black.  I tried venting the top of the panel (no help), and blowing some cool air up behind the panel from the NACAs (that helped a little).  Finally we put a 12V fan from McMaster (P/N 1939K39) above the Dynon, blowing down on the finned part of the case.  That helped a lot.  I haven't seen the problem since.

I don't use it as a defrost fan, just for cooling the Dynon.  It takes cool air from one of the vent holes in the glareshield and blows it down from there.

The yellow wire is a speed sensor from the fan. Computer system can detect if it is turning or not. I've got some higher speed 25CFM fans and they seem to do
a good job. I would think that they'd be a bare minimum
though. I've tried quite a bit lower volume fans and they didn't
work well. So I'd stick with something in the 25-125CFM range
 if you can.

I actually have my glareshield fans blowing out anytime the
master is on, and it's helped me remember to turn the master
off a few times. It's nice because I get the plane all tucked
away in the hangar and I can hear if I left the switch on
or not. No fan noise, no dead battery.

Oh, and newegg.com rocks. I buy many thousands of bucks worth
 of stuff there.
