I am still in the planning faze and rounding up tools but getting ready to purchase the empennage kit in the next couple of weeks.  I am wondering about motors.  Specifically which 540’s will work w/o a whole lot of re-arranging?  I am sure this has been covered several times but I cannot find much searching through the archived messages.  It seems there are several Aztec motors IO-540-C4B5’s on the market.  What about a Cherokee six motors O-540-E4B5?  Will any of these work?

Any info on motors and how to read motor codes would be appreciated.

Any parallel valve 540 will do the trick.  The main thing that may not be the same would be the engine mount ears, but that is not the end of the world because they can be changed.  The parallel valve engines are the 235-260HP versions, not the 300+HP versions.  I think the angle valve models start in K, so anything else should be fine.  Some Aztecs have the 300HP versions, but both of the model numbers that you mentioned should be fine, though I am pretty sure you will have to change the ears if they come off the Aztec.  We have a C4B5 on N256H and we had to change the ears.

Ben
I haven't put much effort into engine choice. All I know for now is that an IO-540 is the ticket and they cost a bunch of money. What I will share with you is that building the RV10 is a lot of fun. I got kit 450 for my birthday gift. I like to think of it as: kit number four fifty, for my 50th.
I too am here in Portland. Handy to Van's close by. I was able to will call the kits in my van.
Couple pictures of my progress attached.
Best wishes, you'll enjoy the project.
