Has anyone in UK fitted an oil-pressure switch to control when an
engine hours meter runs? If so, where did you get it?

A discussion with Skydrive indicates that the obvious place to mount
it is in place of part number 641733, the 10mm x 1mm plug screw which
covers the port on the oil pump that would feed a hydraulic governor.
However, Skydrive are not sure that it will be easy to find an oil
 pressure switch with that thread.

I have spotted one on an Australian supplier's website but can't find
 anything similar in UK.

It's also important to note that what I want is a "normally-open"
switch - that is the opposite of the usual type which is
"normally-closed" and opens with increasing pressure to extinguish
 the oil-pressure warning light.

I'd like to avoid the need to turn up an adaptor for a BSP or NPT
 thread switch.

 regards

				Hi Rowland
If you are fitting a constant speed propeller then using Mark Burton's constant speed controller will give you total engine time,
Or alternately if you have a vacuum system fitted a simple vac switch will work, also there is a two terminal VDO unit http://www.coolairvw.co.uk/ca/mia/d/vdo+oil+pressure+gauge+sender+twin+terminal/pid/6554640?afid=88888
 that would work for you,

An alternative idea is to use a fuel pressure switch (Bosch do a
suitable part). It fits in your fuel line easily and also provides
warning of fuel pressure problems - something you need unless you've
 already installed a guage!

				Rowand,

I used a Sunpro digital hours meter, wired so that it only starts counting
when the alternator is switched on. Has worked well for the last 6 years.
Can't remember where I bought it but I think it was a marine store.

Roger, did you fit this pressure switch? If so please let me have part
number and method of attachment to fuel line.
 Thanks

 Rowland,

In the Europa Flyer Issue 62 Sept.2009 Page 7, Jonathan Milbank wrote an
 interesting article called "Logging Hours"

I cannot vouch for the accuracy of it, but it would appear you may waste
good engine hours by recording every moment the engine is running.

According to his article, for the purpose of technical logs, engine and
airframe hours are the elapsed times between applying full power for the
purpose of taking off until after the landing roll is completed.

Just a bit of food for thought ?

 Cheers
 Kingsley

Roger - thanks for the thought. I do have a fuel pressure sensor &
gauge in the pile of panel goodies, but am a bit away from installing
 it yet.
