Hello Mike, I find that stainless steel hex socket (Allen) drive screws give
a very attractive high tech look. They were used on my instrument panel and
many other places on the airplane including out of sight.

Also where possible I used stainless steel Torx (6 lobe) drive screws in
many applications. In fact one would be hard pressed to find a Phillips
drive screw any place on my airplane.

Check out Microfasteners for a source of the above hex socket and Torx drive
screws:

For driving these screws you need the right tools. A cordless screw driver
with the right insert bits makes working with these screws a pleasure. See
here for some handy kits:

'OC' Says: "The best investment we can make is the effort to gather and
understand knowledge."

PS: After years of search efforts in many different places I finally got
Microfasteners to create stainless steel, 100 degree countersink, flat head,
Torx (6 lobe) drive screws. These are used throughout my plane where
possible. I know of no other source for these screws:

I used philips head AN screws with the built in washer because they are lower profile. If you use the normal kind they stick up too far and the handle catches on the screws. Scott

You can also special order a replacement faceplate from ANDAIR that has counter sunk holes that work nicely with a #8 flush head screw. See the attached photo of my RV-8 installation.
