Not so fast, boys.
In the '30s Packard developed and (I think) certified a diesel radial aircraft engine and someone certified a counterbalanced (with a god-awful lump opposite) a 1-blade for (at least) a Piper J-3 Cub with an A-65.
Neither set the world on fire, but there you are.
I, personally, am intrigued by Paul Lipps' investigations. A good precis of which is available in Contact! magazine #88.5. Special issue, available.
