G'day All,
Bit of an update ...Bob Bohemier kindly set me up with a replacement nose leg ..which he got off to me in record short time ..thx Bob .. The leg arrived today and looks fine but mite be one inch longer perhaps ... The original one is a bit mangled so doesn't measure very easily .

Have pulled the engine out and found some more damage .. The bottom Nose Leg mount has pushed back into the Fire Wall surface causing some damage there ..

And if i grab one wing-tip and tug it fore and aft ..i get some free movement .. !!! ...lifting the wing-tip straight up and down the wing seems good and solid though .. The other wing is ok and solid both ways .

The forced landing was light ..and onto rough soft soil ... The Nose leg broke and folded back on contact ..and the broken leg only left a scrape mark in the ground 30 yrds long ... where we came to a halt .!!

Would be very surprised if i have Spar damage but..... ??

Engine is out ...but not pulled down ..so far can see one broken Valve head .. (and holed piston) and a possible dislodged Valve seat ..

Will know more as i progress along .

Any input appreciated

Graham

Graham
If the wing moves a little for and aft it might be because the rear spar bolt/bushing took a hit
Remove the lower fairing and check whilw someone moves the wing back and forth.
I dought you have a problen with the main spar but I would remove the wing from the airplaner anyway to give it a good look.

Thx Hans ,
His story is a bit similar in that my home r/way is just 450 mtrs too ...and i often land in 200 mtrs as that is the taxi way off on one end .. wasn't so terrific wilh a dead engine though ..as i landed 50 mtrs short ..in the paddock !!

Thx Rick ..rear spar attachments sounds a good shot .. ...(rather than main spar damage ...) will get to it asap ...i am the third owner and so am not that clued up on all the construction ...i had my TR1 shipped over to me here 'Down-under ' three yrs ago .. ..

For Now

Graham,

I not sure if you are aware that my web site has a ton of construction photos of the TR-4 and TR-1 aircraft as well as the construction manuals for both aircraft.  You may be able to find some useful details and photos to help you with your repairs.

Hello Graham, I really appreciate your contributions to this group.

You wrote: "...and i often land in 200 mtrs as that is the taxi way off on

Would you please tell us how you are flying the approach and landing
(configuration, air speeds, flaring technique, etc.) to achieve this 200
meters taxi turn off distance?

Thanks,

G'Day Back,
Thx Bob for the lead to ur Site .... and great work for gathering all that important material together ...

Thx Larry ...for ur interest and rundown on wing removable ...and yep wish u were here to lend a hand for SURE ..

I got out to the plane today and got the wing fairings off ... Have found the wing problem ...the rear wing spar piece that extends out from the wing ...to attach to the rear fuselage spar mount ..is cracked/fractured don't really understand how it occurred ..but should be repairable with some careful thought .. (but no longer a nil accident aircraft ..sob sob ..!)

OC ... about these landings ... well i have had my ticket 20 yrs .. but only got 200 hrs logged ...then i got my TR1 a few yrs back and have put 200 hrs on it ... so thats still only 400 hrs total ...so i'm no hot-shot jockey at all ..

However ...can give u an idea about how it works for me anyway ...
My transition (from the usual trainers ) was a bit .er ..bumpy !! mainly cause i was fixed into a cessna.Cherokee routine .. Stabilized Base and Final speeds ...Flare ...hold off .. touch down .. Trouble was it wasn't working for me with the TR1... My Transition instructor signed me off But i didn't think i really had it at all ..!!

Anyway ..went hm and spent some extra time getting it sorted .. and for me ended up somewhat sloppy compared with to way we flew the trainers
Downwind is now any speed ..100-140 kts ..normally fairly tight ...but powering down abeam the numbers ... turning onto Base and its all about getting speed back to Flap extension speed (100kts) ..and then turn onto final with plent of flaps (depending on headwind) and be 80kts over the fence .. ( too slow and she drops out from under u ) ..Flare and hold-off .is sort of all in one action ...but throttle is needed to smooth it all out . ( My approaches are not text book stabilized ..and are pretty varied ..so long as i get sorted (80kts ) over the fence )

I always like to be HIGH on final ..and my thing is a 'Parachute in style' .. !! I always dread seeing so many a/craft dragging themselves in with shallow approaches .. Just a personal thing maybe ...

Trying to get short landings on a long r/way would a hard way to learn i think ... ( counter intuitive ..)

Our hm r/way is only 450 mtrs ...so the picture and mindset adjusts accordingly ..and after sailing past the taxi-way off (200mtr) a few too many times only then to have to then turn rite around and back-track ...well u just get keener and keener to land it short and just taxi straight off ...

Majority of times i make it short ok ..(but not always ) ... We are at about sea level which of course helps .

I do get some comments that it ..'needs more tail' ...but i don't agree and a reply saying that ..the tail is good for crosswind landings ...and like wise means minimal 'P-Factor ' with take-off .
My landings are probably not very 'text book'.. but i ..feel safe ..and it works so ..!!?

My TR1 was Subaru powered (158 hp) Climb-out saw 100kts at 1000 ft per min .. Max Cruise was 140 kts (at)t 4500 rpm .26 ltr per hr ...(130 kts was 4000rpm ) ... Max cruise was too close to wide open throttle ...and i too hard on the engine i reckon ..
Went to the 200hp subaru to get some extra speed with less load on the engine .. (my bladder is only good for 2hr in the cockpit so endurance not a worry for me anyway !!

For Now

Graham
