I witnessed a rudder jam on a Jabiru 160. The aircraft was landing when the jam occurred and subsequently as it was left with a 'left turn' the aircraft left the runway and turned over in the soft ground after the noseleg dug in.
In the UK there was a mandatory inspection on the control surfaces and the aircraft in question had been checked 2 months ago.
I have posted pictures in the photo section of this group.

Worth bearing in mind if you have or know folk with this aircraft, thankfully the injuries were minor but different circumstances this could have had more serious outcome.

The landing was into wind on a light wind day, the runway in use requires and offset approach as the hangar is on the end of the runway, a small 'jink' is required to line up, I believe it was this small alignment correction that initiated the jam. The aircraft in question is a few years old and has been flown in lots of different conditions without problems up till now.

Further to my previous.

We freed the jammed rudder off after the repair engineer had seen it. A
smart reversal enabled it to come free, difficult to make yourself do
that when you are careering of the side of the runway.

I took another look at the Service bulletin, it calls for 3mm clearance.
The rudder in question looks to have a gap, we didn't get the
opportunity to measure it. The issue I believe is due to the aerodynamic
balancing horn. With full left rudder the horn is in the breeze and
along with the forces on the left side of the rudder this displaces the
top of the rudder to the right. When released the rudder jams as part of
the right leading edge of the rudder displaces to the right past the
right skin of the fin. As both are sharp edged it locks up nicely.

The only full proof cure is to extend the rudder skin on the non hinged
side such that even with full rudder (plus some for a safety margin) the
leading edge of the rudder skin is within the fin.

I know of at least one J400 who has added this improvement.

For now, if the leading edge of your rudder is visible from the side
when on full left rudder beware. Though I believe you will need to have
the aero horn type rudder to add the extra twist to make it step out far
enough.

Hope my explanation makes sense. I think the issue is particular to the
J160 and 170 tails though there maybe others.

Regards, Clive
