Martin;
Just make a sheet by buying some rigid Elast a Foam or Divinylcell, 1/4 "
thick, 3-4 pcf density and laminate a 10 mil glass skin on each side. You
can custom size the sheet for whatever you want.

Regarding Crosswinds-
I did a pure crosswind landing at Valle, AZ once at 17kts reported by
Unicom. Once was enough although plane handled fine. Used wing down
technique and whatever else that kept it on runway.

Do any of my UK owner/builder friends have any small amounts of composite
sheet I could buy? I have bought a new Jabiru engine for my Pulsar and it is
proving a little difficult to retrofit into my Jabiru bed mount - my old
engine was very early and there are now numerous changes to be made. I need
the composite to build a box behind the firewall to take in a new air intake
system that is yet to be invented! I expect the box will be 4ins wide by
2ins deep and 10 ins long and will be coverered by a similar stainless box
in the firewall itself. I know I can make some composite but with all of the
other changes it is just a job too far.

The engine arrived just before Xmas and I have been worried about all the
changes to be made - largely because of a changed induction system and
larger carb.. The induction system fouls the subframe and the carb is now
very close to the firewall. I have read lots about have tight bends near to
the carb inlet and that is the reason for going back into the plane. It
looks like my carb heat system will have to go in favour of an electic
heater - I think that will simplify some of the plumbing anyhow.
I am taking the plane less wings to the welder on Thursday and I hope I will
not have to cut too much away of the front cowl for access for welding - I
am well away from the bearers so it will be a largely cosmetic issue to sort
out when glassing bits back in. The exhaust header pipes all have to be
modified as Jabiru have changed their design but luckily they have gone for
stainless this time which may mean the current pipes can be mated to the
new.
The most involved issue is removing the firewall, wiring etc etc and in a
cold damp hanger its a bit of a drag. I hope if I do it in small stages with
lots of photos to remind me where everything goes back, everything will
eventually fall into place.

I would say your speeds are about 10 kts faster than what I usually do, I only
slow it to <60 kts on short final. It can handle 20 kts crosswind, but it
depends
on how gusty or steady it is. If it is real gusty, even less can get you into
trouble.

The worst crosswind component that I landed in was somewhere in Oklahoma at a
short,
deserted strip. I was in my plane and Doug was in his plane. It was an
adventure
and I'd have to look in my logbook because I put it in there as a special
note. I want to say it was 17 kts. But this was the 90 degree component.
Based on your description, the component was in the 7-14 kt range.

In case you should want it, a non-European source for composite
materials is ACP in Livermore, CA.

Greetings Pulsar People and Happy New Year!

N623JF is still hangared in San Marcos while I search for a job in the
Houston area. Hangar space is hard to find but I think space might soon
become available at Southwest Houston Airport. I've been parking my plane in
a maintenance hangar when it stays with me in Houston (Pearland Municipal)
but the double hangar rent is getting old.

We've done several shorter trips of 90 minutes of less. My mom now lives in
Alice, TX near Corpus Christi so I much prefer flying 90 minutes to driving
4+ hours each way. I now have 60 hours on the new engine.

Bob, that little video on drag makes me want to clean up the gear legs and
finish the inside covers for the wheel pants to get the brake hardware out
of the airstream.

Rhonda and I were married on the beach in Hawaii in late October and life
just keeps on getting better and better.

Martin,

I've just made an air intake, and an electric carb heat system for the
Jabiru 220o that is going in my Flitzer. Wondering if these might help.
There are photos on the Jabiru Engines Yahoo group, but maybe you are
not signed in there. The issue of being close to the firewall sounds
similar, so there is not much room for an air intake box. The electric
carb heat system, I'm hoping, will be OK for NZ conditions, especially
for flying an open single seat biplane. UK conditions might require more
attention to carb heat, although it is probably pretty warm under the
Pulsar cowling.

I've attached a couple of photos. Can send more details if you are
interested.

I bet that missing cover caused a high pressure area under the wing that
added lift and lowered your angle of attack thus reducing drag.
