Pulsar Enthusiasts,

I am in the process of converting my band brakes to hydraulics. I got the master cylinder installation well along, but haven't purchased a brake system for the main wheels yet.

Here are the options I am very aware of. First the most popular Matco WHLW50CC.75 wheel and internal caliper with WHLAXLE7 axle. The other option I have found which would use my current AZUSA 5" wheels is the Great Plains brake kit http://www.greatplainsas.com/schbrakes.html which I don't know of anybody that has used this system. I also called Tracy Obrien about his C90 brakes which also works with the AZUSA 5" wheels, but he did not have any in stock and seemed reluctant to commit to an order.

Outside of the Matco system, is there anybody that has had success with one of these other or another wheel/hydraulic brake system?

Best regards,

Ron Koval

Ron,
I have flown 800 hours on a 582 with the band brakes and the 5 inch lamb tires. The tires were cheap($12 each) but lasted less than 6 months. When I converted to the Jabiru, I changed the tires to Michelin 5X5. I decided I wanted more stopping power and opted for the Tracy brakes, which were marginally better but still subject to fade if they got hot. I next tried a set of original Matcos that were shipped with the 912 Pulsar. They provided mush better stopping power, but still, not what I wanted. I talked with Matco, at Oshkosh, and they had replaced the orignal wheel calibers with larger ones and recommended I buy those. I did, and they work. I can now do full power run ups and hold the aircraft with the brakes.

Now, the down side, I am not sure how much additional heat I am generating when I do those 60 MPH finals, land on the numbers, and make the first tire off. But, I have been able to leave skid marks, so the brakes are working great. Excess heat will melt a fiberglass gear leg, not a good thing, so I try to be very careful with the brakes, but it is nice to know, I can stop quickly, if needed, and not have brake fade.

One other thing, I try to hold the nose off when applying the brakes, to avoid undue stress on it.

So my recommendation, Matco. They know the Pulsar and are eager to work with you and are very helpful. I would not use any other kind. My next plane will have Matco brakes, in fact, already bought the whole setup, including tires, from Matco.

Ron:
I've tried the Matco brakes for my 582 powered Pulsar I; but replaced
them with the Great Planes product.
N190AK is a 500 # empty weight tail dragger and these brakes just barely
hold the craft at 6,200 Rpm static.
Stronger brakes, I understand, might cause the nose to pitch over at
maximum static Rpm.
Of the three (3) brake systems I've tried so far , I like these the best.

Okay, original Matcos were much better, not mush, and it is first turn off, not tire off. My fingers must be too far from brain.

Got to go shovel snow.

Ron,
I have flown 800 hours on a 582 with the band brakes and the 5 inch lamb tires.

Ron Koval

What is this snow stuff ? Don't laugh though. My pool "freeze protection" just started the pumps. It is only 7 pm here. My plants look like they were nuked with roundup in the night. No brass monkeys hanging around here. Why the hell am I hanging around here?

Oh, and Matco sold me a brake upgrade because the originals were designed for ultra lights at 600 lbs gross as I recall. The upgrade let me easily hold the plane with full power. I ruined two sets of pads in about 30 hours on the first set of brakes.

Pulsar Enthusiasts.

I anticipated and hoped for some great discussion on brakes and I appreciated everybody's feedback. This is almost as good as the 100LL and ethanol fuel discussions.

My current band brakes work as I would anticipate. They stop the Pulsar very well. They do indeed hold the Pulsar at full throttle. The few times I experienced fade, I realized, I made a very poor landing. My home airport, class-D Aurora KARR, is getting busier now that two large competing FBOs and maintenance shops operate here (fuel price wars). And now most often it is, you are number 3 or 4, following and being followed by aircraft that don't approach 70mph or under. So I find myself doing the pattern allot faster than I desire and bleed off the speed after the flare at the numbers, still able to take the first turn off. The tower has I requested, maintain speed if able.

The one thing that hasn't been mentioned about the band brakes, and I don't know if it just my configuration, but over the life of the band brake, I have to readjust them (3-4 times over the life of the band). Even though it is relatively simple and doesn't require that I remove the wheel pant, it is the highest importance on the check list procedure, before starting the engine, press the heal brake levers and ask yourself, do they need adjusting. I keep a set of alen wrenches and a needle nose pliers on board in case I need to make an adjustment away from home. I assume that with a hydraulic brake system that the brake fluid keeps filling the caliper cylinder to automatically compensate for wear.

I hope that with a hydraulic brake system I can get back to what I was use to when I owned my Grumman Cheetah where the only significant maintenance was pads every 3 years (conservatively).

There is consensus from both Matco and Obrien, provide enough hydraulic pressure with proper master cylinder leverage and you will hold the plane at static full power. Both don't necessarily feel that is a braking system absolute must have, but if that is desired, their systems can provide it with sufficient master cylinder leverage. My master cylinders have 3:1 leverage that I can scale back if needed. Matco said in regards to the amount of travel needed at the master cylinder, "On a well bled system, ½ inch of stroke would be a lot".

Thanks again for all the great feedback and don't hold back if you have more.

Best regards,

Ron

Ron
I have the Tracy Obrien brakes and have gotten good use of them for over 750 hours. I am now in the process of replacing the linings for the first time. They are a definite step up from the band brakes but do have their own quirks as well.
They tend to get hot if you ride the brakes to steer instead of using the rudder.
I have the recommended 4 to one pedal ratio (Matco Master cylinders) but they still do not hold on a full power run up. They do hold for a normal 1800 rpm run-up for a Jabiru engine. I have a tail dragger so that is all I need or want.
The nice thing about these brakes are that they are lightweight and compact and if mounted as mine are they will fit into the original wheel pant, using the original axle, using the original Azusa wheels. Very inexpensive to install.
You can even take off the wheel without dismantling the brakes from the wheel. I don't know of another hydraulic brake that lets you do this.
They do need a little brake spacer adjustment after about 300 hours that involves removing four screws on each brake and putting in four new shorter spacers. Takes less than an hour for the job.
They develop a very slight rattle as they roll due to wear on the wheel rotor pins(wheel bolts) but it can only be heard when pushed around with the engine off. This can be fixed with buying new wheel bolts. I am also doing that now after 750 hours.
If you expect to use them hard with too fast landings and tend to ride the brakes for steering , go with the Matco.
If you can fly and taxi like you still have band brakes the Tracy Obrien brakes will work for you. Just a little better.
