The Charlotte EAA Chapter had a navigation contest (with prizes) for a couple of years. No electronic nav aids of any kind allowed in flight.... Only for preflight planning. I think we had 4 or 5 airplanes the first couple of years. The last year we tried to hold the event we had only 2 airplanes/teams enter. It appears most of us have gotten lazy about maintaining the skills and now we are intimidated by the challange. Especially when someone is watching us.

For me, it was still fun and satisfying when we successfully found the waypoints and came close to our planned fuel burn for the total fligjt. And it refreshed the skills. But, I admit, when it comes down to getting somewhere, i depend on the GPS. However, I no longer carry my old GPS as a back-up.

I might add that the main reason I feel so apprehensive about GPS-less navigation (and I should specify moving-map-less navigation) is the proliferation of restricted and special use airspace, and the penalties for violation thereof. I have no desire to brush a class B or bust a hot restricted area trying to thread the needle in central Florida and wind up in cuffs.  Even CLT is close enough to be a perpetual obstacle to my typical x/c planning, and I don't act like DC airspace even exists for me anymore.   There's nothing there I need to visit that badly.

So - when are we converging on Carthage next?  Seemed for awhile like it always conflicted with formation practice day.
