All;

We did a 39 day trip in our KIS4 (SN 4052) from 19 November to 26 December. We had many things come up during the over 43hrs of flying and enjoyed ourselves. We (Wife & I) wrote about the trip and, since it is 14 pages long, uploaded it to our webpage. If you are bored and want to read about it you can access it at:

Hi Galin,

Looks like you had fun. Count your lucky stars to have a wife that enjoys flying too Surprised)

I have a trip from London to Cape Town and back in the oven. Hope to get that done this year or next. Reading your travel log is useful and I catch tips where I can for my check lists.

Regards,
Alfred (new owner of KIS TR-1 #30)

Alfred;

Glad you enjoyed the write-ups. We have more stories of other flying trips on our web page www.puertoricoflyer.com

I also have a sample pilot operating handbook there. It is a very large file so it is best to download it frrom the webpage, "stories & adventure" section. Since I am a retired US Air Force officer, I can't fly without checklists so I have a set made up. I attached a copy so you can have an example.

Have fun with your airplane and I hope you enjoy it as much as we are enjoyng ours.

Hi Alfred,

I was interested to hear that you are planning a trip from London to Cape
Town and back. Are you going to be partaking in the Alex Henshaw challenge?
I am based in Johannesburg, SA and a good friend of mine, Chalkie Stobbart,
broke Alex's original record in May 2009. This was subsequently beaten last
year by Steve Noujaim. Another attempt was also made by Tony Smith last
year, but this ended unsuccessfully in Nambia.

Look forward to hearing more about your planned trip.

All the best,
John Petrie

Between 5 and 9 February 1939 Alex Henshaw created a world record. He flew his Percival Mew Gull from London to Cape Town and back again in 4 days 10 hours and 16 minutes. The record has stood for nearly 70 years.
The Challenge was for anyone with a 200HP or less airplane to beat this time.
In May 2009, Chalkie Stobbart flew a GP4 from Cape Town to London and back in 3 days 15 hours and 17 minutes.
Then, in September 2010, Steve Noujaim beat the new record with a time of 3 days 11 hours and 16 minutes - http://www.capechallenge.com/index.php
Tony Smith also tried in October last year in a Glasair III, but failed - http://www.thecaperun.co.uk/flight_diary.html.

There you have it – hope you have now been enlightened somewhat Smile

Ted,

We both seem to have been great at selecting all the aviation orphans. We both picked a great aircraft, the KIS TR4 from a company that no longer exists. We picked a GREAT engine, the Superior XP360 from a company that no longer exists. We picked an engine management system that is still in my mind the best from a company that no longer exists and even though they were bought out by a company that does exist, they have orphaned the FADEC system. Then there was the BlueMountain EFIS system that went out of business.

Seems we are good at picking some great aviation gear but we seem to have problems getting our planes finished before everything becomes obsolete. You and I know the value of what you have and we are both aware of how much we have invested in our aircraft but that doesn't apply to everyone else. Right now, if I were looking to start on a project, I would have to admit that I wouldn't be interested in the KIS TR4 at any price, especially an orphaned one. I am afraid that the only way we will ever be able to get anything out of our planes is to finish them. Even then, it will be difficult to recoup any substantial additional investment if needed to complete.

The market for a partially completed project, rather a KIS or any other kit plane, is never very good.  We know what we have done and know the quality of our work but when anyone buys an incomplete project they must discount for the unknown of workmanship quality. They know they may find that some parts of the plane have been compromised beyond use and therefore must be able to acuire those parts from the manufacturer. If that manufacturer no longer exists, as ous does not, they may be sorry out of luck and unable to complete their project. Those facts have greatly reduced the value of our investment beyond even the normal discount for a partially complete project.

I hate being negative on this issue but I have faced that very reality myself. I either finish it or lose almost everything I have put into it. I don't know if I can help you or not but if you would like me to, I would be happy to add your project onto my website (which I have also been neglecting) and see if it could generate any additional interest. It still gets pretty good ongoing traffic every month and I just renewed it for another year. Put together a complete set of photos documenting the project and its current status along with any written narrative you would like to include. I will add a section for your project and highlight it for anyone coming to my site.  I don't know if it will do any good but I will give it a try if you will get me the details and the photos. Unlike other sites, I won't limit how many photos you put on or how much you want to document. I don't have any limitations on how much disk space I use so I don't have to worry about that. It will be for all practical purposes, your website. Show and list all the parts and we will see if that might be a buyer among those who visit my site. It could be a big waste of time but you don't have anything to lose, its free.

Bob Reed

Ted, Have you tried Barnstormers: http://www.barnstormers.com/
I had good luck with them. A fellow at our chapter has bought and sold several planes/projects with them.

Hi John (Petrie)

A belted answer to your question regarding the Henshaw challenge ...

I know all about it and followed the last two attempts closely. Not my idea of enjoyable (or safe) flying - as the latest attempt illustrated. I believe the Glassair is still sitting in Windhoek (which happens to be my home town Surprised))

My KIS has only 130hp at ground level, so not much of a chance to compete for the record anyway. I'll just make my way down to Cape Town at my leisure. If I add extra fuel tanks I can do 1000nm at a stretch. That will make for five stops for the plane - maybe more for me Surprised).

Not yet made up my mind as to whether adding the extra tanks is worth the trouble. Depends on how easy or difficult I find it to find Avgas when arranging with FBOs for stopovers.

Have you decided on what your next plane will be after selling the KIS?

Regards,
Alfred

Hi Alfred,

Sounds like it should be a great trip - keep us posted when you get going.

I am looking for a partially completed Glasair III or a Lancair 360 as my
next project. Maybe I should look at the one in Windhoek Smile)

Regards,
John

Make sure you sit in a lancair 360 before you buy a project. I've heard they are tiny inside.

Thanks Scott. Yes, I had that too, which is why Iım leaning towards a
Glasair.

Chuckle ... not a bad idea John.

Easy enough to hit the road through Bots to have a look at the Glassair in Windhoek (don't get caught speeding though Surprised). It managed to fly there at least, but from what I read the engine was fairly well cooked along the way. You already know how to contact the owner too.

If memory serves he was planning to fly it back to UK this April -- things might have changed since I picked up that snippet of information.

Cheers,
Alfred
