Hello OC

As I reported earler I usually get 2200 RPM static and 2800 WOT (and maybe
exceeding 2800 after a minute or so, but I never run wide open and 2800 for
longer times) at 2-3000' altitude

This is with IO-240A and Prince P-TIP with 62 dia and 68 pich.
(manufactured around 1997-1998)

Is yours a P-TIP too OC ?

When I bought mine, Prince claimed that a P-Tip versjon would "act" like a
normal version with 4inch or so larger diameter and same pitch. (I cannot
remember exatly what he said) So the only reason to have a P-Tip would be to
increase ground clerance and decrease tip speed. Less tip speed could in
theory result in less noise (one of the reasons I went for Prince and
P-Tip). In case someone is not familiar with the Prince term "P-Tip", it is
sort of a winglet, and I am sure Prince web site explain it all. (but have
not checked)

Hello Bob, Yesterday I wrote: "I plan to fly this morning and I'll try to
confirm some static RPM and max throttle numbers for my TCM IO-240 B9B
powered KIS TR-1 and get back to you."

Here are the results of my flight yesterday:

1) STATIC RPM: 2,000 AT FIELD ELEVATION OF 190 FEET MSL

2) WOT (Wide Open Throttle) RPM at 3,000 FT MSL: 2,750

3) INDICATED AIRSPEED: 140 KNOTS

4) FUEL FLOW: 11.1 GALLONS PER HOUR

It would appear that my 68 inch diameter by 69 inch pitch Prince propeller
is a fairly decent trade off between climb / go around and cruise
performance. Yesterday was fairly cool so this performance is better than I
would see on a hot summer day. Also at a nominal cruise altitude of 8,000
feet MSL on a standard day I would expect that the engine could probably
exceed the limit of 2,800 RPM at WOT by a little bit.

Hello Bob, You wrote: "....he complained about the KIS's poor
performance when executing a "go around"."

A) Your memory is phenomenal. Below is copied one of the early, if not
the very first, postings by Alfred in which he stated: "...would just
like a little extra ooomph when I push in the throttle for the odd
bump or go-round". I think that he had something like 13 landings in
his recently bought KIS at that time. Maybe he was expecting the KIS
to jump around like the microlights that he talked about in some
detail in his subsequent postings.

B) Alfred also wrote: " My current prop is a Chris Lodge 66.5" dia x 68"
pitch. Static rpm is 2200 and
max rpm in level flight is 2500 at low altitude. However, with that
2500 rpm I see 140 knots IAS - not yet quite sure how accurate that
airspeed indicator is."

I guess he feels that he wants to change his prop so that he reaches
the full 2,800 RPM limit of the engine at max throttle in level flight
at low altitude thereby giving him more of a climb / take off oriented
prop than a cruise prop.

My prop is a Prince 68 inch diameter by 69 inch pitch. I plan to fly
this morning and I'll try to confirm some static RPM and max throttle
numbers for my KIS and get back to you.

PS: This Matronics list is fabulous in that one can go to the archives
to search and extract info like this.

Thank you for the information about your prop performance Hans
Christian.

My current prop is a Chris Lodge 66.5" dia x 68" pitch. Static rpm
is 2200 and max rpm in level flight is 2500 at low altitude. However,
with that 2500 rpm I see 140 knots IAS - not yet quite sure how
accurate that airspeed indicator is.

Let me use this opprtunity to also thank you in person for the
excellent POH you compiled for the KIS2. It was an invaluable source
of information when I was evaluating the KIS2 type as a potential
buyer.

I agree with your comment regarding maintaining a fairly flat/level
attitude until touchdown. With the laminar flow wing the KIS2 does
not like to have its nose pointed too far skyward and tends to bite
back with a forward rotating moment if you do pull it up too steeply,
especially with full flaps down.

With one stage flaps she seems quite well behaved and has no trouble
keeping the nose up after touch-down. I am quite happy with her
handling, but would just like a little extra ooomph when I push in
the throttle for the odd bump or go-round
Surprised)

Seems that my Chris Lodge propeller will do for long range high level
cruising.
So perhaps I'll keep that for the odd long trip and optimise the
Prince P-tip for more performance at the lower end of the range.

Regards,
Alfred
