This is a series of short videos by Craig Catto. Craig is a bit of a legend in the US, his props are much sought after in the Long EZ RV and oddly enough Supercub fleet.
The videops give a good explanation why,
Graham

Graham,

I once had a long talk with Craig about a possible prop for the Europa. He had some interesting ideas, suggesting that the ideal configuration would be a two blade design and thought that variable pitch was unnecessary.
When you listen to him describe the variables, you begin to realise what skill prop design is.
He started as a teenager and designed and built his own micro-light long before "micolights" had been invented. Here's an interesting old documentary featuring Craig and his flying machine filmed some 30 years ago. Look out at about 3.17

Graham,
Thanks much for the link to these videos. Back in the foot launching mid-70s, I was flying a Mac 101 powered Icarus II w/ a 22" prop from John Moody turning over 7000 rpm w/ flight ops limited to the low temps. of midwinter. I then built an Easy Riser and added a PSRU...w/ a slower turning 48" prop, I could fly year round.
While on a trip to LA, I tracked down Craig Catto in his garage and was amazed to find this audacious 16 yr. old carving propellers...he's certainly come a long way. About a year ago, I exchanged some emails w/ him about a Europa prop, perhaps in collaboration w/ Paul Lipps...alas, nothing's come of it as yet. Glenn Crowder is flying his Sube-powered Classic w/ a 3 bladed Catto prop which Glenn is quite pleased with.
Craig has some reassuring thoughts about FP vs. CS props, particularly where weight is a consideration.
Fred

Craig
the thing that impresses me about Craig Catto is his open mind and his enthusiasm.
