The problem with this kind of silver reflective material on the inside of the windshield is that the UV penetrates the window twice. Once as it enters then again as it is reflected back out. UV light can speed up the deterioration of some plastic material, like plexi-glass. This is normally not an issue with glass windows.

I use a Bruce's Custom Cover "Sunbrella" on the airplane. At least this way when it is out in the sun most of the light (UV included) gets reflected before entering the windshield.

Hello Scott, Bruce's has both canopy cover only and combined canopy and engine cover. See here:

http://www.aircraftcovers.com/index.php?cPath=1_5_385_386&tplDir=fallback

I have the canopy and engine cover. If I take it with me in the airplane on a cross country flight there is no room / weight available for any other baggage.

I also have a Bruce's canopy cover and it fits well and looks good. On the web page it says it is "nylon Silver Laminate" not sunbrella acrylic. I have noticed that when it is hot the cover shrinks and when cold it become loose. Not only is it great for keeping the sun out but it is also great for keeping the interior dry even if your doors leak.

At one time they or another company offered very light weight ripstop nylon travel covers.

I would just get the canopy cover. That's a good point about weight and bulk though. I'll have to ask about that. Hopefully the canopy only cover is manageable.Scott

When I talked to the rep at Sun-N-Fun he said they can now make them in either nylon silver laminate or sunbrella whichever the customer want and pays for. I did not ask the price difference.

I have experienced the same shrinking/loosening with mine as Mark has. Overall I am pleased with the cover.

I don't understand the need for an engine cover.  Why cover the cowling?

Hello Al, You wrote: "Why cover the cowling?"

One reason is birds nesting. In a 24 hour period they can make a mess of nesting material and bird crap inside the engine cowling that can take hours to remove. Also some of the bird crap can be very corrosive depending upon where it is located on the engine or accessories.**

If birds nesting is the problem that you are trying to solve by using an over the engine cowling cover then blocking off bird access through cooling air exit openings is also required.

Also blowing sand can be another reason to seal off the engine cooling air inlets.

**PS: An alternative to using the combined canopy and engine cowling cloth cover to is to use blockage of the cooling air inlets and outlets cut from plastic foam blocks. Don't forget the most handy standby -- blue painter's masking tape. A two inch wide roll of this tape is an essential part of my cross country kit -- can be used for everything from sealing rain water out of door hinges and cracks to control stoppage. Very light weight and very adaptable for many purposes (including taping irritating passenger's mouth shut).
