				Gentlemen,
 Could you advise what grade of lube you are using for landing gear
 etc. Anyone using synthetic? What commercially available tool are you
 applying the lube with?
 Thanks,

 Phil

				Phil;

 If you are referring to grease I use and recommend Aeroshell 5.

 For the wheel bearings: Aeroshell #5
 For the propeller: Aeroshell #6
  For the landing gear and other moving/sliding assemblies: Aeroshell #7
 For the actuators and other air components we use MIL-G-4343 Pneumatic System grease. it can be found as Aeroshell #43 or Royco #43 or Jet Lube #33.
 Cheers,
 Cliff

				Cliff;

  For the propellor – Many years ago (25+) Shell stopped producing Aeroshell Grease 5 which was the Hamilton Standard spec. for the counterweight type propellor (2D30, 12D40, etc.) So most overhaul facilities reverted to Aeroshell 6. A few years later the demand for Grease 5 was so high that it was produced under the ROYCO name and then finally back under Shell.
  Check the Aeroshell specs. for 5 & 6. You will find that Grease 6 is an “economical” general purpose grease. Its load carrying abilities are limited and it’s upper temperature limit is extremely low. The blade bearing rollers and races in the type of propellors we are dealing with require a high load bearing grease such as Aeroshell 5.

  This may be more critical for HS counterweight types than for the Russian/Chinese variety since the blade turning torque is set much higher. - 50lb/ft vs 8 lb/ft.

  For the landing gear Grease 7 is fine but so is Grease 5. Why add another grease gun?

  For the pneumatic system I agree.

  Cheers;
  Walt

				*Good afternoon Walt,
 You're absolutely correct- it's all about the grease guns! *grin*

 Hartzell propellers are manufactured and serviced with Aeroshell #6 and
 does not recommend mixing of greases.

 Therefore we have one grease gun labeled for propeller use only.

 We have one grease gun with Aeroshell #7- which is a general purpose grease
 approved for damn near everything.

 We have a bearing packer filled with #5 which is recommended by Aeroshell
 for wheel bearings.

 Since we service over 60 aircraft a year and these greases are approved for
 the applications for which we use them, it's simpler to use the "5,6,7"
 rule in most cases.

 Best regards,
 Cliff
