On bottom stab VG's

The reason I put VG's on the bottom of the stab was to hold the nose gear off the ground longer after landing. I didn't like the way I would lose control authority halfway thru the roll out and the nose would just drop. (A flight instructor thing.) I figured the air was probably separating at the hinge line when the elevator was fully deflected up.

I haven't taken the VG's off since I put them on, but my recollection was that they made an improvement and, like the other commenter here, I can keep the nose wheel off the ground well to the end of the roll out now. (But some Glasair pilot with an RG told me at OSH he had tried them after my article and didn't notice any difference.)

I recall starting at something like 4 inches from the hinge line and working my way forward an inch at a time until they seemed to "kick in." I stopped experimenting after that.

They are stuck on with hot glue and have stayed on thru ice.

I don't see any reason why VG's on the bottom of the stab would improve stall speed. That would be a wing thing.

Good point. Guess I mis-spoke when I called it a stall speed issue. What I mean is I think the GI stab/elevator loses authority at a higher speed vs the GII stab would, and as a result the nose drops and the a/c descends, which produces a similar result as a stalled wing at touch down.
I've concluded keeping a little power on at touchdown helps break the descent and maintain elevator authority...
