large SUV ?>>

Hi all,
Let me expose my ignorance on yet another subject. What is a SUV? I presume the V is for vehicle, the U is for Universal or Utility. The `S` ?

I assume from general comments that they are big gas guzzlers. In the UK we lump them all into a hated group called 4 X 4`s or `off roaders` in spite of the fact that many are only used for the school run and never go off the blacktop at all.
The Chancellor has just increased the road tax for such vehicles to £400 p. a. Hurrah!

If you want a chuckle check out Youtube and find `Put a Yellow ribbon up your SUV` . Beware, some comments may offend those of a mild nature.

Cheers

"Sport Utility Vehicle"... and it's just as you surmised. Used to be all of them were based on truck frames/bodys/engines, but nowadays they are downsizing them to be based on large car frames/bodys/engines, but still their gas mileage is pretty bad. And you're right, most never leave the roadways, but then most people buy them for the room or for the status, not because they have to deal with off-road situations.

And, mea culpa... I drive a 10-yr-old Suburban that's about to cross over the 200,000 mile mark, at about 15 mpg the whole way.  But for a while I had a business that required the space, so I don't feel so bad about it. Even now, I can haul a riding lawn mower in the back of it, or tow my Kolb trailer. (See, I got Kolb in here!).

SUV is a Sport Utility Vehicle. As you say, most never see "offroad" at all, and are used as daily drivers. There are many sizes, have many uses, and are no worse on fuel than vans and pickup trucks.   Lar.

I have been looking at a Ford Expedition or equivilent that will handle off
road New Mexico adventures and haul my KOLB. I am hoping to be able to check
out some ghost towns and old settlements from the air and the ground if I
ever figure our what part of New Mexico I want to relocate to. I have had
about as much I.diots O.ut W.ondering A.round I need for this life time.

"Sport Utility Vehicle", as others have said. Like you I've always hated them (though I did have fun a few years ago with an old Jeep for off roading (always on established trails mind you; I wasn't one of the morons who go out and tear up the forest making their own trails). However, I've recently come to the conclusion that I should consider one; I need a vehicle to tow my Kolb trailer, and having a vehicle that my wife can drive and I can use occasionally (instead of a large car for her and a pickup for me) may make more sense.

For the last six years I have had a 95 Jeep Grand Cherokee with the big straight six in it. During that time had a water pump go bad, and the wiring harness for the driver's door go bad, the window didn't want to go up or down. No other problems. It will pull almost a ton of of boat and trailer with no complaints at all. The 4 wheel drive is clunky to get in and out of, but in 4 wheel drive it will drag a trailer up an off camber grassy slope without ruining the lawn. Several years ago the wife and I drove it from Tennessee to Seattle and back and enjoyed the trip, the seats are very comfortable. It gets 20-21 mpg on the highway, about 18 mpg around town, best ever was across the high desert south of Yosemite - 25 mpg. <grin> I love it. Have heard that the V-8 version sucks gas bad. My wife is a Camry person, but has no objections to driving it at all. For what it's worth -

That's impressive... I was lucky to get 15 mpg in my CJ5 with the six. The
CJ would've pulled the Kolb trailer (see this is Kolb related) but the
handling would be terrifying (a light 10' utility trailer was bad enough at
anything over 45 mph). My thoughts are running to a Cherokee Classic or a
4Runner-- the Cherokee is a little smaller than the JGC, mechanically
similar to the CJ ad the 4Runner is the same as my Toy pickup with a
different body, and both have an enthusiast base for advice just like this
list.

The Kolb is light but a fully enclosed 20' trailer is heavy.

Actually, the Jeep lives with the Kolb... There is a covered gap between the
hangars, and it lives between two Kolbs. Maybe that's why it works good...

Personally I drive an SUV Jeep Wrangler because when the floods, landslides and Earthquakes tear up the land here in California I will be able to put it in 4wd and get my self and loved ones out of harms way.

Also comes in handy when roads are washed out or accidents block entire highways and you need to go around the mess.

Also good for launching the Seadoos since I can drive in deep to the fenders and not have to worry about the engine quiting.

Its also nice to know I can mount a .50 Cal on the Jeep if things start going to hell out here some day. I think I'll mount it next week, those road ragers are really starting to get out of hand....LOL

I am able to tow a 1000lb 30' glider/trailer at 75mph no problem with this combo so I imagine that my Kolb US will not be a problem either.

My commuting to work vehicle gets 50mpg (Motorcycle)

We have a Cherokee around here also...225,000 plus miles on it. One overhaul on the straight 6,.still use it to pull trailers and go to the airport and play in the snow.

Also have a couple of other psuedo jeeps...

the middle one is actually a "67" Roof palamino, and believe it or not, it was produced as a fairway mower with a belly deck. I use it to run around the airport where I keep my Kolb and the Luscombe. much more interesting than a golf cart, and at the airshows and fly-ins, we use it to haul gas in 5 gal cans to the aircraft parking ! It has a new v-twin Honda in it and the original hydrostat tranny!

and the little one I built for my grandaughter, one winter a couple of years ago when there was not an aircraft project in the shop.
AND cause the barbie jeeps just didnt cut it out here in the country!

to windy to fly today, in either the Kolb or the Luscombe!
