I read that coating a surface the rivet is in contact with before riveting is NOT an approved method for aircraft construction.

For what it's worth ($0.02)

L. Pazmany, a major aircraft designer, wrote in his Pazmany PL-4A Construction Manual (Ref. pg 14 item 4-2-4 Installing Pop Rivets) "Take each rivet and dip it into the Zinchromate", and then later at the end of the instruction item he adds, "When using Zinchromate or Epoxy for dipping rivets, it is unavoidable that they will find a way into the riveter, plugging it". He then goes on to explain how to clean the tool using MEK. He also has an item explaining how to clean the manufacturing oils (and finger print oils) off of the aluminum, then treating with Alodine and then applying Zinchromate, before assembly.

In practice at major aircraft manufacturing facilities, it is not uncommon to install fasteners wet with MIL-S-8802, a polysufide sealant.

This is probably meant for "Steel" rivets....

and if MEK cleans the Rivet gun , What would it do to the rivets ?

MEK is a big part of the Stitts process..., seems like it would be a mess.

Stainless Steel rivets wouldn't need this....
