I heard yesterday that ITT corp won the ADS-B contract witht he FAA.
That actually means that WSI will be the official provider of weather
for the ADS-B system. I guess that wasn't surprising though because
they were the weather source that the FAA used elsewhere too.
I did question them as to if this means the weather will be free
 via ADS-B or will it later be fee-based. I don't think a fee-based
thing is on anyone's mind right now this early in the game.
But, I did hear that the only thing that will be available
initially will be NowRAD, so all of those other weather features
are still something you'll want one of the paid-for services
to get. There are lots more things of value that you get with
those services, like lightning, echo tops, winds, and so on.

Anyway, here's the news clip that I saw this a.m. after having
 heard the above...
FAA AWARDS ADS-B CONTRACT, MARK YOUR CALENDAR FOR 2020
The FAA on August 30 awarded an ITT Corporation team the $1.8 billion
contract to build and operate the ADS-B (automatic dependent
surveillance-broadcast) ground infrastructure. Unlike traditional FAA
projects where the contractor builds the equipment and turns it over to
the agency, ITT will own the infrastructure and supply aircraft position
data to the FAA. While the FAA calls ADS-B the "backbone" of the NextGen
air traffic control modernization program, "this is really just Phase
One of a project that extends out more than a decade," said AOPA
President Phil Boyer. "This won't be like the hurried Mode C transponder
mandate when Congress gave aircraft owners 18 months to equip. If ADS-B
is ultimately mandated for general aviation, it won't be until 2020."
