And can you tell me where I can find this size wire? As long as it's music

wire, will it work? What is the metalurgic properties? Is it stainless? Do

you think .055" would work also?

I believe it is plain old piano wire.

It will certainly depend on your outer case.

But it will be better than a stranded cable with regard to buckling at 

throttle lever.

Moments ago I took delivery of McMaster-Carr part number 9495K92, “Type 302/304 stainless steel spring wire 0.059” diameter, ¼ lb coli, 27’ coil” at US$5.32 plus shipping.  I’ll post another note if I have any problem fitting the stuff but it should fit fine.  

(.059 inch = 1.5 mm)

Hi Troy, 



We tried to find piano wire to fit in the Europa supplied housings but were unable to make that work. We purchased piano wire from McMaster but it comes rolled in a 6" diameter coil and we were unable to get the wire straight enough to work in the housings. 



So we purchased Bouden cables from ACS, PN 05-15500. To connect to the carbs & throttle housing we used conduit adjusters from Lockwood PN BR03K. Had to drill them out to fit the ACS cable but the system works very nicely. Also lubed the Bouden cable assemblies with graphite lube. 



Eric Trombley had a post on the forum several years ago on how he did this.

Question:

When you reduce friction on the throttle with solid piano wire, will the

carb springs snap the throttle to full bore? (as per Europa Service

Bulletin #7)



I can see that solid wire can reduce the possability of kink (bulge) near

throttle, but "when" one solid cable breaks at the throttle termination,

is the spring going to be able to overcome friction of solid cable and

open to full bore?



Someone a while back mentioned he used Motorcycle clutch cable, and it

would allow a quite good push without kinking. My experiance with solid

wire cables (lawnmowers, snow blowers, go carts and mini bikes and manual

choke cables for automobiles), is terminations tend to eventually fail

without warning. On the other hand clutch cables have pretty much proven

to be very reliable.



Of course a 2 cable per carb push / pull would probably be a winner!

Check what the race car people use, there are some interesting twisted 

metal tape cables that are very low friction, and pushj pull

Perhaps I'm not clear on the process, but, what would one use to connect 

the solid cable to the standard Europa throttle arm?  Are the stock 

fittings available without cable inserted?

Sorry I omitted the rest of the setup.  At the throttle lever, each cable is wrapped around a cable bushing (Lockwood #2711 or 2710; ACS CF2710 - the catalogs are a little confusing - you need one to fit AN3 bolt and .078 dia wire-pretty sure it's the Lockwood 2711). You'll need two of them.  Wrap the cable very tightly as there isn't much room in the throttle lever housing.  I secured the ends of the cables with Cable End Fittings (Lockwood BR06 - or perhaps a lawnmower end from the local hardware store) and also used some Araldite for extra security.  Place one cable on either side of the throttle lever like the factory setup.  At the carb end, the Rotax supplied fittings will accommodate the .078 wire.
