I have one that was installed my model 2, I think it once was an option
from Skystar so not available that way. Perhaps John McBean can advise.
Mine is nothing more than a standard access door from some manufacturer
that came with instuctions on how to cut out the cowling and install.
It's flat and does not match the curve of the cowl, but it works well.
If you could find a source for a suitable door it wouldn't be too hard
to figure out the installation. I'd be happy to take pictures of mine
and copy the instructions when I get home Sunday.
Meanwhile, I found this for a Rans. Looks like it could work and it's
 very reasonably priced.

After two attempts to get an oil access door for my Skyfox cowl for
my Kitfox, (one didn't fit and the other was a warped piece of
fiberglass) I ended up laying up one of my own. I taped down Saran
Wrap over an area of the cowl on the mirror side of the oil access
opening, then layers of glass matt, soaked with resin, etc., then
topping the whole pile with another piece of Saran Wrap to provide as
smooth a surface as possible. This way the curvature of the door
nearly matches the contour of the cowl. The cowl already had the
recessed opening to accept the door that I made. If you don't already
have the recess, you can cut an opening to suit yourself, then
fiberglass a recessed lip under that area, and possibly use the cut-
out piece as the door. There will of course be some finishing
required to make a nice fit and smooth surface.

My Avid cowl for the Jabiru engine came with the opening and recessed lip, but no door. I cut out a piece of .060 aluminum that fit the opening pluss I left two tabs that went into two slots on the front edge of the reccess lip (the tabs have a bit of a S bend in them)   on the back end of the door, I put one camlock to hold it in place. It works for me. If you want it to be out of fiberglass, I would very carefully cut it out about 1/2" bigger both ways than you want.  Then put some plastic tape on the back side of the door (the new fiberglass wont stick to the plastic tape) and tape it back in place from the top of the cowl. Now you can make a lip out of fiberglass resin and cloth that will match the door exactly. Once the fiberglass sets you can pop the door off and fasten it how you like. Hope that made sence and you were able to follow me through that.

I'm not too sure what the Kitfox cowls are made from now but for cutting
Kevlar I found the best thing to use was a high speed spin saw. The bit can
be very thin and the opening made around the door can be very thin also.
The spin saw also allows you to make curved corners on the door. Rounding
the corners will reduce the possibility of causing the cowl to crack through
the corners of the door opening. Rivet the hinge for the door in place then
you can tape around the edge of the door or use cling wrap to the bottom of
the door. With the door held in place you can go ahead and glass the lip to
the bottom side of the cowl. One of the nice things about doing this is the
lip you glass in actually reinforces the cowl around the access door.
Finish the job by mounting a Camloc or Dzus fastener to hold the door
 closed.

 Jerry,
It sounds like you got all of the possibilities. Mine was
cut out of the cowl, hinged, and an aluminum lip bonded and riveted
to the inside. Once you cut out the door, clean up it's edge. Install
the aluminum or glass lip below the door and clean up it's edges.
Then wrap the edge of the door with a couple layers of narrowly cut
flash tape and center the door in the opening. Tape the back side
with duct tape. Then fill the cut-out with a resin/micro mixture.
Pull the door, remove the tape, and re-install. Sand the resin/micro
flush and you'll have a nice seam. Attach the door with a short piano
hinge and use a Cessna oil door latch to latch it. (I tried finding
the latch at ACS and via Google and had no luck. I'm sure it's
available after-market. I found a bunch of Cessna parts at
 www.broadiesaircraft.com.)

I think the one I used is the Camloc access door. p/n05-02124...
$12.50 ea, page 107 of this year's Aircraft Spruce Catalog...and let
me go on record as saying that the Spruce cat. has to be one of the
MOST frustrating to try to find anything...like this....in! You've
got to paw through the pages as opposed to going to the going to the
index, because either they don't know what to call something, or they
assign a page number to it, and it's not there, or even close to
there.......ok, rant over, if you persevere, you'll find it, I'm sure.

				Jerry,

The Series 7 has a molded impression for the oil door which is cut out and an aluminum cover is hand bent to shape and installed with an aluminum piano hinge. The Kitfox manual has you secure the latch using winged camlocs but I like the flush latch closure better. If your cowl doesn't have the molded impression, simply fabricate a latch cover from a piece of aluminum that is the same thickness as your cowl then bend it to shape. Once you are satisfied with the shape, you can place this cover on the cowl and trace it. Then carefully cut and sand/file the opening to shape allowing for a 1/16 clearance on each side. Then glue and rivet strips of aluminum under the cowl for the latch to rest against and finish the install by gluing and riveting the piano hinge on. The piano hinge knuckles will require a bit more than 1/16" clearance so trial fit this and trim as necessary. See my installation for ideas. This is a good, functional installation and looks good to. Hope this helps.

As Guy said, the piece you cut out of the cowling makes a perfect
door, there's no need to fabricate one. On my Model IV I had to put
the opening directly in the center to align with the oil tank and it
would have been tricky to precisely bend a piece of aluminum to the
shape of the cowl which had a ridge down the middle.

I cut an aluminum frame to go under the opening to act as the stop
for the door and to reinforce the fiberglass. A piano hinge, a flush
latch, and some filler were all that was needed to make for a very
 functional and attractive installation.

I agree with Mike completely about using the cutout especially if you have a situation like he had. Just a word of caution if you use the cutout peice of fiberglass...be very careful when cutting with your dremel as they can get away from you in a quick hurry and ruin your cutout.

They are quite common in airplane supply circles. Among others, I've
seen them at Aircraft Spruce. Kitfox, LLC might have them as well,
you should check with John McBean.

Use the Dremel with the spin saw attachment. Draw out the shape of the door
 and cut slowly.

I think I already mentioned to make nice curves at the corners to reduce the
chance of cracking the cowl at the corners. Sand both the door and the edge
 of the hole.

I like the piano hinge but you could just as easily use 4 - 6 Camlocs or
Dzus fasteners and have the door completely removable. BTW if you hinge the
door at the front air pressure will keep the door closed if the closure
 comes undone in flight.
