Has anyone moved the Rudder Pedals or the Rear Bearing Channel (6B8-3) forward so as to provide increased leg room on the 601XL?

Looking at the drawings, it appears there is little leeway to move the Rudder Pedals/bearings forward, hence the idea of moving the entire Rear Bearing Channel assembly forward.

The obvious limit on the forward side would be interference with the firewall. Immediately aft of the firewall are the Lower Engine Mount Fittings (6B6-5). Perhaps the rearmost bolt through the Lower Engine Mount Fittings could also pass through the Rear Bearing Channel and still leave sufficient room for full rudder pedal travel?

Has anyone done something similar? Any other ideas out there?

				Hi Patrick,

I would not suggest moving the channel forward. If anything you
might get more leg room by moving the channel backward toward the
 spar carry-through.

You set the rudder pedal locations by adjusting the length of the tie
rods that go to the nose wheel control column. The pedals freely
rotate in their mounts, so the location of the mounts and the channel
don't play much of a role in the final pedal positions.

I would suggest mounting the rudder pedal support channel as shown in
 the drawings.

I'm very interested in this problems also. I'm even considering
doing away with the toe breaks to get an extra inch or so of forward
movement. Has anybody else done this? The Tecnam I'm flying now has
a single handle in the center console that seems to work Ok, it just
 different.

With nosewheel steering, you can probably get by just fine with a hand
brake. The toe brakes give a bit more control on a slippery runway
 though.

I've been thinking about the single handle brake but I'm not far enough along to have to make a decision yet.
I have flown many Cherokees over the last forty years that were equipped just that way. We have several Challengers and a least one Weedhopper at our local strip that have Black Max brakes. They have a single motorcycle type lever on the stick. Also if you look close at photos of Van's RV12 prototype it appears to have a brake lever on the stick also. Since ZAC designs don't have castering nose wheels I don't really see why it wouldn't work.
Like I said I'm not there yet so I have plenty of time to think about it.

I probably fly the same Tecnam you do with the center brake. I hate it. Its hard to get used to. The other thing I miss by having the center brake is the individual brake control over each wheel. It makes it difficult to do a sharp turn around when you can't hold pressure on just one brake - like the Cessna 150-152's I'm used to flying. I'm looking forward to having that individual wheel control back again.

				Pat,
I've been late in reading the list lately, so I'm slow in responding
to your post. I'm a tall feller and find my knees in the dash panel in
nearly every plane I climb into. The factory 601 wasn't the worst, but still
too tight for optimal comfort. I very carefully measured, calculated, and
consulted Zenith about repositioning the entire rudder channell forward to
fit me better. To fully evaluate this, you must look at the intended neutral
rudder pedal position, which is more aft than you might think. I ultimately
moved the entire assembly forward 60mm (2 3/8"). I can now sit in the
cockpit, and all is well. I had to shave the rudder pedals slightly to clear
the firewall in the most extreme position, and you would never encounter
this position in flight, only while braking during taxi. At 2" forward, even
this minor mod. wouldn't be necessary. My floor pan was predrilled, so I
had to fill the unused holes with rivets. My firewall slots were cut as per
plans, and still fit the steering rods exactly. Zenith had no problem at
 all with this change.

                         Lynn

Thanks Lynn. I'm thinking along the same lines as you.

I spoke with Zenith too. They mentioned that I'd have to fill in some pre-drilled rivet holes, but they didn't have a problem with it.

I'll do some measuring & positioning and see how things look as far as exactly how much forward to go on mine.
