All 582 drivers, past and present,
I'm doing my 150 hour check and the book says I should
change the needles and needle jets. Should I? Or does this date back
to the days before the needle O-rings? Do these wear out from
vibration? Anything else I should change out at 150 hours?

 Thanks,
 Guy Buchanan

Guy, vibration does cause wear to the needles, needle jets, and slides, but
it takes A LOT more than 150 hours to cause it, IMO. I would save that sort
of thing for when you do the major overhaul.

				Guy,
On the subject of 582 carburetor maintenance - I bought and installed the
carb "rebuild" kit at about 200 hours (this past summer). O-rings and stuff
and two viton tipped float chamber valves. Then all hell broke loose. At
idle, gas was pouring from the vents and anywhere below 5000 things ran very
poorly. There were some suggestions that the engine was vibrating too much
causing the problem but several local two-stroke people and a video clip to
Lockwood got me past that explanation. Over a period of days I eventually
replaced the new float valves with my old ones - problem solved. It turned
out that Bing or Rotax had increased the stiffness of the little springs in
the valves and that caused them to not seat as well. From what I've learned
recently the change was related to a 912 problem not a 582 problem and that
now they've settled on valves with springs intermediate in stiffness to old
and new. Meanwhile I'm sticking with my old ones.

Guy, I would do nothing but check everything including carb sockets and change gear box oil if you have not in the last 150 hours.
change fuels lines every year or 2.

My current 582 is was installed june 2006 and is pushing 400 hours and current spark plugs almost 150 hours , change exhaust gaskets twice and NOTHING ELSE.

Older engines might need cranks seals if over 5 years old.

 Thanks Dave,
It looks like I've done all of that and more. I'm surprised
you can go so long between de-carbs, since I've done it every 50
hours and each time it seemed like I scraped off a good amount of
stuff. My plugs also seem to gunk pretty bad. I'm running 100LL,
Decalin, and Pennzoil in the oil injection. My rear banjo fitting
leaks so I have a lot of oil in the intake when I start. I wonder how
 much that contributes. Any ideas?

 Thanks,

 Guy

If you are getting oil in to your port then replace th Banjo,,, there is a check valve in there that will allow this to happen when it becomes faulty
 about 27$ for one.

I run regular gas and oil injection . AV gas is not a good thing for 582s and I not sure if using Decalin helps stop crud , lead etc from depositing.

Decarboning at 50 hours would only be advisable if you are running pre mix very rich like 30 to 1 maybe. My oil injection keeps mine nice. I don't think Pennzoil or my XPS mineral oil changes it all at but avgas certaily can help add to the gunk.
