Nose Wheel Bearings Questions

All



I've been working on the nose gear and pulled the Matco Wheel out for a test fit (kit is from Nov 2005)



The included bearings have the name Azusua on them and are stamped made in China.



Any issues with these wheels / bearings that anyone would care to comment on??  And while we're at it, What grease should I pack them with and how often should I repack them?

Larry,

I've never heard or read anything that cast doubt on Azusua Bearing 

quality.  I thought the bearings would be sealed each side and not 

require any grease.

If you need to inspect these every year (without seals), it's probably a 

good idea to repack them at annual inspection with any good white 

lithium grease.

Ours fell apart after about 10 hours (couldn't find any of the bearings) if  it is the same one piece bearing. If you have the small axle I would call zenith  and upgrade to the bearings that comes with the new kits. They  use thicker  axles and better bearings and I think the axle is only like 8 bucks.

I've always used wheel bearing grease to pack this type of bearing, mostly

on automotive front wheel bearings.  They definitely get more use than

airplane wheels.  Seems to me that white lithium might break down sooner.

What say you?

Hi Jim,

Lithium is additive to lubricating grease to raise temperature tolerance 

and maintain viscosity.  It doesn't absorb water and is non corrosive 

unlike

some general products sold as wheel and bearing grease.  I don't think 

the stuff breaks down if you clean and repack with any regularity.

I check mine at annual inspection, but my bearings are sealed both 

sides, so I will be replacing the bearings within a 5 year period.

I think you are looking at a sealed ball bearing as that is what my 701 has and not a tapered bearing the would need to be preloaded. If you preloaded the sealed ball bearings (pinch the bearings together) they will fail soon. When all is in place you should have some end play to each side on the wheel. If you don't and it is preloaded as you would a tapered roller bearing it will certainly fail soon. Do not preload the mains either, give them a bit of space. A little space will allow the brake pads to be pushed back from the rotars a bit  which will ease the friction on the pads and allow a more free wheeling on take off, thats good! Alot of this was gone through some time ago. I'm sure it is in the archives somewhere.

Straight sealed bearings will fail with side load.

I modified my wheels by making a spacer to keep the inner part of the 

bearing in the correct position. this would also spread the side load over 

both bearings,

With out a spacer the correct tension is guess work.

Hay U all,I just went through this bearing  problem on my 601,I had  the 5/8 roller bearing,I replaced it with a 5/8 tapered, much less friction.  Qestion call Pat 941 270 7802
