1. Hartzell Prop

The three blade composite prop for the IO-540 should be shipping from Hartzell this week. The current plan is for me to fly to Oshkosh (yes, this year) with the three blade prop on the RV-10. The test data that I have seen shows that the plane should accelerate and climb better with the prop and should only be a couple of kts slower in cruise. Dan Benua's local RV-10 has the same engine and ignition as mine so we should be able to compare the performance of the two props, although my RV-10 will be heavier.

2. Window Installation

I installed the windows in this weekend using Hysol from Lancair http://www.aerocraftparts.com/ItemForm.aspx?item=9360-QT

This stuff works awesome and in my opinion is the only way to install the windows. It is thick so it does not run all over, has a pot life of 1 hour, and when you get it on the windows it wipes off using Colman lantern fluid. It also does not eat into the window causing the cracking where the clamps were. I drilled #40 holes around the edge of the window (not through the window) and then used wing nut cleco's to hold the window in while the Hysol cured.

3. Fuel pump to servo hose.

The standard fuel line routing from Van's shows the 90 deg fitting on the fuel pump and the straight on the servo, this causes the fuel line to get closer than I like to the exhaust. I found that if you reverse the line and put the 90 on the fuel servo you have tons of clearance with the exhaust.

Did your plans still show the OLD exhaust system or have they finally
revised them to be up to the Vetterman Exhaust? I ended up flipping
my hose too, I think, but I attributed that to the difference in
the exhaust systems. You're right though...makes much better sense
that way by giving more clearance.

Thanks for the status. Is there any information you can relay on the final testing of the 2 blade prop? We know it is smoother but did you see any decrease, equal or increase in any areas while testing with the RV-4?

2) WINDOS---I installed my windows this weekend also and I used the Weld On. Problems I found were that the Weld On is too thin for a number of reasons. The cabin top flange can be warped in places which makes the depth un-even. With out the glue viscosity, it is difficult to get the bond to fill in some of these warped areas. I also used clecoes around the parimeter and wide tongue depressors with #40 holes as retainers while glue set.

I am seriously considering sanding out a channel in the cabin top and the window to allow the glass cloth to lay down in it so the entire top doesn't have to be built up too much. A prime example would be on the bottom of the rear windows where the metal fuse is only about 3/4" away from the window, I don't want a high spot in the transition from the metal fuse to the cabin top.

I think any cracks or crazing people have seen is by use of clamps with uneven pressure or uncompatible solvents, not the Weld On.

Hey John,

I kinda like the fact that Weldon "melts" into the Plexi -- no question about the bond. As for being too thin, I applied it to both surfaces first -- the Plexi and the fiberglass -- no runs. And just enough pressure to get the bubbles out. (I used foam blocks and straps with the doors attached) I sanded out a channel before laying in glass cloth -- posted pictures on a previous post.

I've left the finished product out in the sun (100+ here lately) and no evidence whatsoever of different expansion rate cracks at the joint.

We're about ready to order a prop -- my partner doesn't like the looks of the new one. Didn't I read here awhile back that the three blade metal prop is actually a little LESS efficient than the two?

I don't think they ever updated them from the originals.
Too bad so many kits had to do it without the right plans.

I also used Hysol for all windows, including the windscreen. It took about 1/2 qt. for all. Used it for the naca air vents also, in place of proseal.
