Hi, Guys!

What's the availability of CJ wings? I'm looking at a project that needs one. Is it a center section w/ outer panels?

Thanks so much, and HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

Gang,

We are gaining a fair amount of experience with these items as all our
projects have glass something or other in them.

First with regards to the magnatometer. in the CJ we mount it where the
remote gyro compass mounted. In most CJs you actually have a choice,
either in the tail or in the wing. Both will work well depending on the
manufacturers instructions. Remember you have to shim the unit to get it
exactly level, but with the structure already built into the airplane that
has been plumbed, a lot of the work is already done for you.

OAT probes. Actually a slick place to mount it is in the rear of the nose
gear well. It works very well there, doesn't get dirty, is out of the
exhaust path, and is out of sight.

As an aside, I'm thinking of redoing the front panel in my airplane and
making it one piece. The stock configuration is a challenge to put the
EFIS stuff in and lay it out nicely. With the new Garmin 696 out you can
now have a high quality full glass panel for right about $10K.
Amazing....

Regards,

Barry

Rico,
While I am sure it is possible to change out the center section I would not think it would be possible without a complete fuselage jig to aid in proper reasembly. If your project has the center section stub wing pushed aft, I'd say it was not econonically repairable. You could most likley replace the entire fuselage for 15 to 17K, then move all your stuff over into the replacement fuselage.

Good used wing panels are around 7K now, some cheaper are around. Be carefull about corrosion, hidden damage and old modifications done in China. Some have been found to have holes hacked in the main spars. Inspect them by removing both the tip and the tank to get a good look at the structure.

Hope this helps.

Always Yakin,
Doug

Doug,

Thanks for the advice. The project I'm looking at actually taxi'ed into some trees. The fuse looks good, but the wing is pretty much toast as far as I am able to tell from the pix. Are you saying that damage to the center section most likely distorted the fuse to the point of being undesirable? Or are you saying the center section would be better off replaced?

Thanks so much!!

Rico

The stub wing is a total side to side assembly it would be nearly impossible to change out without factory jigs. If its distorted the fuse is pretty much toast. Look for wrinkling or deformation of the top or bottom skins between the wing attach points. Also look carefully at the area of the tail cone just under the horizontal stab. If there is a diagonal wrinkle in this area it means that the tail group is now out of line. This happened when one wings takes a big hit and the fuse snaps sideways. All this and more happened when I had a engine out and ended up picking apples with a CJ6.
