Mine does, plus the outlet for the fuel going to the engine is about
one inch or more up from the bottom of the header tank. Hell, I could
go a year without sumping the tank, but I won't.

Thanks for all the good advice everyone.

I never heard about not using the barbed fuel fittings, and I always hate trying to get the fuel hose off those things ! I will be buying the bulbed fittings from now on. Thanks for all the other advice, it gives me a lot to consider before building my fuel system. I presently use aeroquip 606 hose with firesleeve, I'm torn between that and the High Pressure auto fuel line which is made for auto fuel... Whichever one I use it will have firesleeve all the way to the header tank.

Do you guys use fuel shutoff valves ? Where do you put them and what brand of shutoff valve is best for auto fuel and 100 LL that I will be forced to use on cross country flights ?

For valves, I use one on each down line from the wing tanks. Mainly
these are for servicing the filters which are in-line. I never shut
them off, as with them open, the wing tanks self-level. The valves
that I used are in the Grainger catalog (grainger.com) under part #
6DG45, Brass Mini Ball Valves, 1/4" female NPT. (I got the idea from
William Willyard, whose Kitfox was the first I saw fly, just weeks
after buying my unfinished plane.) I also use one as my main fuel
shut-off, and that one I DO operate daily/flight-ly, and it is
located inside my center console, using an extension handle to reach
it...the valve lies at floor level.

I am "forced" to use 100LL all the time because I like the idea of it
being free of ethanol, has a better track record (it is written) for
being handled more carefully, and because it is formulated (it is
written) for use at altitude. This is the kind of "forcing" that I
can LIVE with.

Lynn,

I am guessing that the Jabiru engine handles the lead in 100 LL better than the Rotax 912 does ? Do you have any lead issues or increased maintenance with the Jabriru 2200 when using 100 LL ? The increased maintenance list and drawbacks to using 100 LL in the 912 is quite long Sad

Hi Mike,

The Jabiru engine has lead issues just like all aircraft that use 100LL. The Rotax gets a little extra attention because it has a gearbox, too. Maint. schedules all have to take into account the lead build up and change oil, plugs and maint. accordingly. Anyone using 100LL ought to be using something like Decalin to help keep the lead build up to a minimum. You can carry Decalin in the cabin and does not have the harsher chemicals as TCP does. You use 1/2 oz. per 10 gals. You can buy it at Aircraft Spruce.
91 Octane (with or without ethanol) is much less an evil than 100LL. Rotax very soon will have in writing 10% ethanol to be ok in their engines. It already has the 5% in writing and most (no, not all) fuel pumps only test out to 5-7% ethanol. Many people use automotive parts in there kit planes and with a little double checking you may find your fuel system is compatible with ethanol just like your car or motorcycle.

I buy my Decalin from http://www.kitfoxaircraft.com/. I try to shop there
first so they can stay in business and keep making great planes.

Pete
Shop Kitfox first.

It handles the lead quite well, but I'd like to use TCP or some other
additive, but Jabiru says no. One of these days I'll ask why. When I
tore my engine down due to a broken timing gear, I found the rings to
be free, but there was some carbon buildup behind the rings, but
based on my experience rebuilding auto engines (apples and oranges?),
it wasn't out of the ordinary. I've never found the lead to be a
problem with the spark plugs.

That is very strange, I wonder why an engine manufacturer like Jabiru would not want people to use something to help reduce the effects of the lead. If you do find out, please tell !!

The pessimist in me says it is "planned obsolescence" but the
optimist in me says they would want to see these things go as far as
they can, hour-wise, so I'm at a loss to figure out why.
