				Hi guys 
 
 I am looking  for a pulley on the prop governor and the power lead for the shower of sparks, and also the metal cap for the tach drive. I am hooking up the shower of sparks , and someone asked me if you anyone hooks up a bypass so you could hand prop the engine in case the battery failed?

				Henry, what do you mean by:    "and someone asked me if you anyone hooks up

 If the battery fails, you will have no starting ignition system.  Period.
 What would you need to bypass if the battery was dead?  The "shower of
 sparks" system (or boost coil if you will) requires battery voltage to
 operate.  No way around that fact.  Of course you could use an external
 power source as an alternative, and the Russian aircraft have provisions for
 doing exactly that using an external power connection.  Is that what you are
 talking about?  
 
 If the battery is dead, and you try to hand prop the engine, you are going
 to be doing it on the mags alone.  Which may or may not work, (and is very
 dangerous) depending on who you talk to.  Sometimes the engine seems to fire
 instantly using hand propping on mags only.  Sometimes it will not start at
 all.  I have spun it with compressed air and no shower of sparks with the
 mags on and it never hit a lick.  Other people just bump the prop and it
 starts all by itself with the mags on. (I actually saw that happen once and
 the prop hit the person doing it).  
 
 So what are you going to by-pass?

 I guess your right , if you don't have battery power than you don't have to worry because there is no fire on the shower of sparks,  I had a aircraft mechanic in the weekend and he mentioned about bypassing the start switch , because it would be hard to hand prop and depress the starter button at the same time, we are starting to wire it up and trying to find out how, I guess he wasn't thinking about that . can you use a regular silicone wire from the shower of sparks to the left mag??

				Hello, this is maybe a little off subject, I will mention that I have adopted the use of the Yak cowling ring which is a beautiful piece of work, to a cowling system built and designed mostly by a friend of mine. The lower cowling is fiberglass amd we incorporated a 185 airbox and bracket air filter onto the M14P. I have an extra airbox and I could put anyone in touch with him on the fiberglass components.

 I was just working on a Moose this weekend out in Wyoming, and the owner has a need for a metal cap for the tach drive.  I suggested he track down a local machinist to turn a cap with metric threads to cover the original tach drive (he has the storage cap and of course the tach drive housing for patterns and threading measurements). If he comes up with something, I'll let you know, and by the same token, could you post here if you come up with one yourself?

				Where is the Moose being built in Wyoming? I headquarter North West of Cody part time but am building my Moose just East of Billings MT at Columbus MT. I could also use a metal cap for my tach drive if some one comes up with a way to make some.

 Great!  How much, and I assume they are drilled so they can be safety wired?
 
 Also, I had a call into Cliff about the small rubber buttons that act as standoffs on the cylinder baffles (four per baffle), but have not heard back from him.

				Yes, that would work... I think what he is suggesting is this:  Normally the
 starter button activates the starter air valve and also turns on the
 starting ignition system at the same time.  You could in fact put in a
 "bypass switch" that would allow you to PREVENT activating the starting air
 system, yet STILL operate the starting ignition system.  This could indeed
 be used to handprop the aircraft and make it a tad bit safer since the
 starter air valve would never be activated.  This is a simple one wire
 issue.  It also assumes a 2 man procedure.  
 
 Most folks just shut off the main air line and bleed the air system until
 there is nothing left to GO to the starter air valve, but to each their own.
 Pushing the starter button and hand propping at the same time?  I guess you
 mean doing this all by yourself?  No one in the cockpit?  Well... That is
 the exact method that was used to provide me my spare YAK-50.  A nice fella
 tried to do just that... It started.  Away it went.  Right into a hangar.
 Not really something I would ever want to do.  Further, the shower of sparks
 // boost coil system is not something you want to turn on, get out of the
 cockpit, walk around to the front of the aircraft, start it, then go back
 and turn it off and then switch on the mags.  Just not do-able.  It also
 would be really close to stupid.  I doubt your mechanic meant that.  
 
 The system in the YAKS use a very very high voltage wire.  It is a stranded
 center conductor with a Teflon tape wind around it, and then a shield over
 top of that.  Remember that this wire goes directly into the mag cap itself,
 and there is a ton of energy in that thing when it is both starting and then
 running off the mag itself.  This produces a lot of RF energy from all the
 sparks, which will tear your radio to pieces.  I have never tried straight
 8mm silicone wire, but it should work.

				They are quite reliable.  Usually the problem is the wire  from the starting coil to the magneto.   A simple test is to make the  spark jump to ground.  If it is working properly when you press the button  with 24-25 volts applied to the unit, it should jump to ground about 10 - 12  mm.  If you have to hold it close to ground to get the spark to jump, the  coil is weak or the internal points have build up on them.

				To add to that comment.... I have had some really nasty problems getting
 the high tension wire to properly make contact in the mag cap itself.
 The spark is so strong that when it did not make good contact with the
 "screw" that is supposed to penetrate the center of the high tension
 wire from the high voltage starting coil (this is a Teflon insulated
 wire on stock Russian systems) the high voltage arced out of the entry
 point on the cap for the wire and to the mag's metal top cover.  If you
 ever smell something like rotten eggs after starting your engine, that
 is the smell produced from the phenolic material burning up in the mag
 cap as an arc burns it.  My solution was to use a metal wire crimp
 shortened to about 1/4 inch that I crimped onto the end of the high
 tension wire, and then shoved that into the mag cap.  When the screw
 went in, it made a very good electrical contact to the metal wire crimp
 and I have had no further problems.  Before that, I would get it
 working, or so it seemed, and then on a hot start the thing would just
 not work at all... As in the engine would not start.  Take it apart, cut
 a little off the wire, re-penetrate the starting high tension wire with
 the screw... And it would work AGAIN, for a few months.. And then do it
 all over again.  I did this no less than 5 times.  The crimp thingy
 fixed it.  
 
 Not suggesting this with the actual spark plug wires.  If you have not
 already done so, rip the stock ignition harness off your M-14 and
 install Dennis Savarese's replacement kit.  Considering the cost of the
 kit as compared to the improvement to the engine, it is the best "bang
 for the buck" of any M-14 modification I have ever seen.  Don't leave
 home without it!  
 
 This may sound like an advertisement... Sorry.  It just is a big mistake
 to not do this on an M-14 that you expect to be reliable in extreme
 conditions.  Like in a Moose.
