I have the L/R Vans horizontal (split) hinge pins with tab. They look pretty cheesy IMHO. What have others done to dress up their hinge exit points? I sort of recall someone posting a bunch of cowl hinge photos a while back (OSH?), but can't find them in the archives. There must be lots of good ideas out there.

The fiberglass tabs described below were suggested by Roger
Heisdorffer (a real RV expert). I'm grateful to Frank Benedict for
advice and help.
A 1 1/2" wide by about 5" long tab was fabricated with its upper
half bonded to the inside of the top cowl at the exit hole location.
The lower half of the tab was formed to the inside of the lower cowl,
which had been sanded fairly smooth and waxed for release. A
countersunk hole was drilled through the lower cowl and the tab to a
nutplate on the inside of the lower half of the tab. This allows a #8
screw to hold the two cowl halves firmly together, mitigating (I hope)
the problem of vibration-induced hinge eye breakage. The same screw
affixes a "medallion" that covers the exit hole and prevents the pin
from moving forward into the prop. About 3/8" of the pin extends out
of the cowl when the pin is bottomed on the firewall; the medallion
pushes the pin end inward against the cowl.
With the cowl installed, the exit hole was drilled #40, then enlarged
with a Dremel and centered on the pin.
With the cowls removed, but pinned to each other, a 6" or so dummy
pin was wrapped with a couple turns of electrical tape maybe 2" from
the end to form a channel to guide pin insertion. The dummy pin was
inserted from the front of the cowl and used to push the cowl pin back
until the tape on the dummy pin contacted the hinge.
The cowls were taped and waxed where adhesion might have otherwise
been a problem; the gap between the cowls was filled with child's
modeling clay. The tab (about 20 thicknesses of 8 oz fabric) was then
laid up with West System over the dummy pin. After the tab cured, the
dummy pin was removed, re-taped and reinserted. The gaps were filled
in with West System epoxy and Hi-density filler blended "good and
thick" with roughly an equal volume of Cabosil. The cowls were again
taped and waxed to avoid accidental glassing together. With a little
sanding, the hole looked very good.
Making the "medallions" is a whole 'nother story - it was about 12
hours' work to learn to design them and fabricate them from flat 1/4"
60601 plate. They're fitted to the cowl and curved around towards the
front so that the single screw holds them firmly in place with no
rotation. Several builders locally have cut off a stainless steel
spoon (yes, table silverware!) for the same purpose. I'd be happy to
describe making the medallions if anyone's interested.
