Anyone using or planning on using aileron boots in their RV-10? Opinions for or against?

I have them from Abby at Flightline. Don't know how necessary they are,
but I figured they'd get rid of some drafts. I sealed my fuselage up
fairly well, and if there were a draft, it would come up
through the hole where the stick comes out. The aileron boots complete
the sealing to the wing area.

Roger,
If the RV10 is anything like the RV8, I would highly recommend installing the aileron booties. I flew my RV8 initially without them (froze my a$$ off) and after installing them, noticed a huge improvement! The air finds it way into the cockpit around the aileron tubes. Maybe Tim can give us a report living up there in WI?

I can't say that it made a difference, since I never flew it without
them. What I can say is that I sealed the hole in the fuse down
by the landing gear on the belly at the corner of the skin,
and had the aileron boots installed and the firewall sealed well
to prevent CO issues, and it's very nice and tight. The heater
ROCKS for those cold weather fliers, and built like mine, I
think there's no way to complain about the warmth in the plane.
I can't say what it would be like at 10 degrees with the open
holes though.

Tim, How did you seal the hole in the fuse that the landing gear protrudes?

I filled it with a gob of clear RTV and kind of smoothed it
to look halfway good.

Isn't there a chemical problem with off the shelf store RTV? Did you use some special stuff?

You're right that some flavors of RTV are acetic acid based or something
like that, and some aren't. In general, the "sensor safe" ones should
have no effect for you. The regular ones can be corrosive to aluminum.
I did call permatex though and ask them about the corrosive effects
and they told me that once its cured it would be no problem. I used
the Van's recommended 26B red on some baffle parts....no problem, and
that's not the sensor safe stuff....it's actually my favorite. On this
hole I used clear, which I'm sure is acid based, but not only was I
applying it on a painted area, but even if it wasn't painted, I really
don't think there's much to worry about in most applications. Take
some and squirt it on some scrap and look at it a month later. You'll
see what I mean. I'm sure it would look the same years later too, if
it cured well.

Just checked out the MSDS sheets for the permatex blue 6B and 26B and
both say "When this product is exposed to moisture acetic acid may be
formed" I assume that this is prior to drying. But the red is
recommended by vans and the blue is sensor safe.
Both the Ultra blue and the Ultra Copper (high temp) do not have acetic
acid mentioned on their MSDS.

Do you have the MSDS sheets available for GE 109 RTV? It is a silver color.
I use the following steps to get a finished surface to RTV.
1.) Wash off the area where the RTV is going to be applied with soap and water, then dry.
2.) Tape off the area around where you are going to apply the RTV.
3.) Apply the RTV and use something like a popsicle stick or tongue depressor to scrape off the excess RTV. This is the messy part, so have something to put the excess RTV into, like a paper towel or cup.
4.) Carefully remove the tape immediately, while the RTV is still wet.
5.) Use green soap, or liquid soap, on your finger to smooth out the RTV bead into the area your sealing. This should give the RTV surface a gloss finish, feather the edge of the RTV onto the surfaces, and the soap on your finger won't let the RTV stick to your finger.

Jim Ayers

I checked our airline product stock and found the follow RTV products as
safe. RTV Clear #108, RTV gray #157, RTV white #102, and RTV white
#162. We also use 31, 103, 106, 109, 157, 159, 730 (solvent resistant)
and 738 (electrical sealant - white) but I haven't confirmed all of the
colors yet.

I have never been cold in the RV10 but it may be the area I live in. In
Tim's town you may need them. I have the AWI exhaust system and from
what I understand it puts out the most heat as well. Randy

When I was at Aerocrafters in January I took a tour of the Lancair
facility and met with the engine builder there named Scott. I asked him
what they use to seal up the engine and baffle and he said to use clear
silicon. I wrote down the name but was basically off the shelf silicon
from Home Depot. He said he has been using it for years on all the new
Lancair's that go out there door with no problems. He also said that
when you do your baffling make sure the aluminum is stress free. If you
have to force it to a shape or it bends when you attach it with screws
it WILL crack and you will be replacing it.
