Hi fellow builders,

After numerous inquiries for pictures of our almost finished bird, I
decided to send them via the list. (The gallery didn't work).

Pictures are preliminary, as we are sure to produce better ones when we
finally get some sunshine again.

Apart from that it is "just another Europa", there are a few things
worth noticing on this airplane:
- It is a "stealth" high top. It has nor the aquarium style front
window, nor the blown up upper cowling (not intended to insult anyone
with a different taste of course!). This is "halfway between mod 64A and
mod 64B".
- We did some rigorous things with the cooling duct. We used the
standard radiators, but with a diffuser and expansion area, and a
movable cowl flap. On the pictures the cowl flap is closed.
- On the nose of the cowling there are two naca ducts with a shroud
exactly aimed at the cylinders, to get a stream of air from top of the
engine downwards, instead of a stream of air from the front to
downwards. The front inlets are intended to be used by landing lights,
but we will leave them open until we have done some tests in flight.
- The nose wheel shaft is extended by 1 inch to allow more prop clearance.
- Note the wing fairings, they are designed by Fred Klein, and enhance
the look of the airplane and most likely improve the air stream.
- The high top mod allows for a larger instrument panel. We decided to
abandon the standard instrument module completely and built our own. It
is in fact hardly larger than the standard Europa module, but because it
doesn't feature all these space wasting edges and curves, there is much
more panel space available.
- We have harnesses that are fixed to a (reinforced!) area on the upper
fuselage. This will eliminate the risk of spinal compression.

On one picture: the proud builders together with their airplane.
Although I'm the one communicating via this list, I should point out
that I actually built the airplane together with my wife. She has a PPL
to, and knows as much about airplanes as I do. As you can expect, we
were always reviewing each others building work, to insure the best
quality of work.
If the gallery works again, we will upload some pictures of the build
process.

Oh, and we are aware of the acronym DIY in English speaking countries.
We deliberately selected this registration! Wink

The airplane has a Rotax 914 intercooler with a Woodcomp SR3000W/2 prop.
Weight is still unknown but it is for sure not going to win the light
weight contest. Wink

Looks great Frans! How about an article for the Europa Flyer once it has
flown?

Brian

I'm sure we will let you all know when it has flown. If you think
anything we have to say is worth for an article, let us know.

Frans C

A very professional and innovative (and fast) build indeed.
I notice that there does not seem to be a guard over the interior door handle. It is worthwhile having. One or two early Europas lost a door.

Cheers C   Karl

Great looking bird Frans!

In addition to what others have already mentioned, I'll offer my appreciation of your very nice job on your shoulder-width mod.  I see you modified the doors  to meet the new seal profile properly. I'd be interested in any info on the door frame mod and it's impact (if any) on the shoot-bolt mechaism.

Cheers & thx for posting the pics!

Well, eh, to be honest, I got these doors and fuselage as is. I believe
it became "standard" some time ago, most likely before my kit was
produced. Wink

Congratulations Ilona and Frans!

What a wonderful life experience to build a plane together and doing it in the farmer´s house surrounded by rich nature and horses.

I noticed you have changed the harness upper attachment point AND the harness type for quick release.
That is a good investment for safety.

That's why we changed it!
It consists of two parts, both sold by Aircraft Spruce:
http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/appages/harness3b.php
http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/appages/seatbelt1a.php

Apart from that it eliminates the risk of spinal compression, it is also
a "quick release" type, where all four parts disconnect if you want to
get out. We tested the original harness, but we found that if we would
ever end up inverted, or would have to ditch, it would be possible to get
entangled in it. The new harness has no loops or anything
that can trap you when you are in a disoriented situation and are in a
hurry to get out.

About the connection point: the door flange is already quite strong by
itself, and its shape makes it convenient to attach the harness. We
reinforced the area with a anluminium angle bracket, folding around the
flange so it "grips" from behind the flange. We further reinforced the
area with a few layers of bid. Of course if the situation is violent
enough something will break, but this applies to the other (original)
attachment points as well.

If anyone is interested in a set of original Europa harnesses, never
used except for test fitting, let me know.

Frans

Frans,

That is something I have declared at least two times before.
Also, the task to get you out from the wreck is much easier for rescuer if unlooped belts...
You are only one (w me) I know who has reacted because of this potential risk.

There are more potential risks that could easily be avoided.

What about routing fuel lines through the cabin, so that if there is a
leak the foot bath in front of the seat fills with fuel. Or using a fuel
return line without a one-way valve, so when the line breaks all the
fuel will drain into the fuselage, regardless of the setting of the fuel
selector.

I'm also sceptical about the recommendation to connect the trim directly
to the battery instead of after the master switch. Oh yeah, go ahead and
also connect the stall warner before the master switch, as the manual
suggests. There are probably some more things worth keeping when the
master switch is off. And then, when you need to make an emergency crash
landing, you are sitting in an airplane with fuel behind your back, and
a lot of live wires running over the entire length of the aircraft which
you can't switch off...

Maybe we can assemble a list with safety improvements so everyone can
benefit from it. There are probably some things I have overlooked as
well. I must assume there are more people on this list who are concerned
about safety.

Hi Frans and Illona,

As I told you both when I visited you a few weeks ago, you have an absolute beautiful airplaine. The pictures show just part of her beauty for sure!

Please let me know when you're going to take her up the first time, I would love to be around on that main event!

I will let you know. This saturday we will get the mandatory
transponder, ELT, pitot/static tests done and compass calibration. If
there is also someone around to do the mandatory "examination" of the
airplane I might be able to get the airworthyness certificate very soon.
Once the paperwork is done, we will start working on the first flight. Smile
