Definitely a bad situation, but I was somewhat relieved to hear that it was his airplane and not stolen, as was originally reported.  There's all sorts of crazy stuff that could be mandated (and has been in some places) related to locking airplanes, access, etc.

I'd like to hear someone's idea for how "security at these small airports" would have prevented what happened today.

--"No sir"
--"alright, have a nice flight"

My thoughts exactly, Tim. A rented Ryder truck would have been a better choice than an airplane.

The local congress woman (Texas) is already calling for tighter GA security. She runs her mouth better than she runs her Congressional District. She'll do anything to get in front of the TV cameras and it's usually something that doesn't make any sense.  That's exactly what she's doing as I type this. "We need security at these small airports."

This isn't going to be pretty.   Time to open the wallet for AOPA and EAA again.

That is usually my response when some non-pilot type mention something like this.  "Light airplanes like these don't carry much, if someone really wanted to do damage they would just rent a Ryder truck, fill it up with fertilizer and diesel and drive it through the front entrance."  After a second or two of thought, they usually don't have much else to say.

Sounds like that local congress woman went to the same school of electioneering as Chuck Schumer.  Every aviation incident in the NY area, he takes an opportunity to get in front of the news cameras.  Now he thinks he knows better than the FAA and wants them to take his suggestion on the training of pilots.

Actually, the cubs are doing quite well. At this time, they're in

hibernation, having gained around 300 Lbs. since they were born last
spring. This year should see them roam farther to the west and make
their new home near the river and the Truks mountains.
Thanks for asking.

Possibly. The westward migration is to the NW where it's warmer. In
the winter, in the south, we have "snowbirds", and I see a significant
increase in 'snowcubs' headed west.

Tim

All you have to do is move to aircraft friendly Canada. No TFA's, no FAA,
lots of uncontrolled airspace, friendly controllers. What more could you
want!

Cheers

Yeah, another wack job....

http://www.cnn.com/2010/US/02/18/texas.plane.crash/index.html?hpt=T1

Seeing the building burn, it seemed like a lot of fire and
stuff, but when you consider that the building looked like
it was just stick-built walls with Metal studs, it wasn't
like the building was built very tough. If it were a brick
building, there wouldn't have been much to see I'm sure.

Rick's right though...a Ryder truck and some diesel/fertilizer
did a heck of a lot more damage, so a small plane really
isn't a huge weapon when used on a building.

Nope, just Cubs threatened filibuster to get a new stadium complex, plus rights to develop commercial district and otherwise fleece the taxpayers of Arizona and all tourists that visit the state while using no primer at all and JB Weld to touch up the fiberglass in non-political gray. Meanwhile all other team owners are squawking that their porridge has been stolen and isn't fair since they already got their ransom at the public trough.

Are you guys talking about the cubs from that city with leadership where they rip out airports without any warning?
We really are in big trouble aren't we. There is not one thing we can bring up that we cannot tie to something that is very disturbing in the aviation community.

The west sucks, stay where you are, there is nothing to see here.
