All,
The latest Lightning Newsletter, the March 2010 issue, is now published (a few days early) for your "winter reading enjoyment". Although I have not heard from Nick that it is up on their site yet, I do know it is published on Jim Langley's site and Ryan's Green Landings site.

Featured in this issue is a great Australian travelogue by Peter Mitchell about his latest Lightning trip. There is also a very informative report on the Sebring show by Mark Stauffer with some good photos by him and by Tex Mantell. The Lightning sales update section identifies four new Lightning owners. Yes, four SLSA Lightnings LS-1s have been sold since the later part of January. Look in that section to find out who the newest members of the Lightning flyers are. I hope each of them will send in articles for future newsletters to tell us about themselves and how they chose the Lightning and how they are enjoying their new jet.

The dealer's section has inputs from Dave Jalanti, Ryan Gross, and "Dougie" the Green Landings Hangar Rat. I have certainly heard of flying squirrels, but apparently the Green Landings guys have a rat that wants to fly. In the news from the builders and flyers section, Carl and Pat Beatrice have a write up about last falls Lightning homecoming and Steve Hacker (our "really cold weather" expert) has several inputs - the most important one about him soloing his Lightning. Congratulations, Steve.

There are also inputs for flying safety, Lightning skunk work, tech tips (write ups by Bear and Tex), other items and final thoughts.

Mayday, Mayday, Mayday. As always, I am requesting any and all feedback on "your" newsletter. Without your feedback it is hard to know if we are "on target" at providing informative and entertaining info for the Lightning newsletter readers. Without your inputs, articles, and suggestions, it would be impossible to keep writing the newsletter. So, as always, I request your help and inputs to keep this going.

I hope you are enjoying good weather where you are. I was in some snow driving to a meeting earlier this evening. I can't wait for Sun N Fun.

Another interesting newsletter, thanks Buz.

Thinking about Steve's experiences with mogas, the other variable to consider is the blend of fuel, is it a summer or winter blend and how has it been stored, all adds to the interest and potential unreliability.

The plug in float charger solution was neat, and Buz's (almost) bare wire provides the basic alternative although I can't wait to see what happens when the dog runs through the hangar, disturbs the wires and pushes the active clip up against the exhaust pipe, should be fun! What really has my attention however is the tennis ball. Has someone invented antigravity and not told the rest of us?

Glad you noticed that tennis ball, Selwyn. Very observant.  With the really cold temperatures and really dry humidity this time of the year in the states, the static electricity is really strong. So when the dog was running through the hangar and disturbed the wires, pushing the positive clip against the exhaust pipe, he made a strange noise while his tail and private parts went one way and his nose and tongue went the other way. The hair stood up on his body, rubbing the lower fuselage and the tennis ball he was chasing just jumped up and stuck to the bottom of the airplane. Darn, I wish I had that on camera - could probably win some big money on the Funniest Animals TV show.

And if you believe that I have some really beautiful ocean front property in Arizona for sale (right next to Wayne Lenox's place).

Truth is, on the Esqual, both wing fuel tanks are vented through the fuselage. The aluminum vent lines out of each tank also carry the fuel quantity wires and after the wires come out of the vent lines to the panel, the vent lines then T together and vent overboard just aft of the firewall. That tennis ball covers the vent line to prevents insects from clogging the vent. Yea, I know, there is not much chance of insects this time of the year, but putting on the tennis ball to protect the vent line from insects is a habit I have gotten into. I had a friend that had an engine failure in his Pitts because mud dobbers had filled the vent line with mud. If the tank can't vent as fuel is used, no fuel will flow = engine failure due to fuel starvation. The other problem with the Esqual vent set up (other than a single failure point) is you occasionally get a fuel smell in the cockpit because the "goop" that is supposed to seal the vent line where the fuel quantity wires come out will dry out, crack, and you get fuel smells in the cockpit. Nick solved these problems with the Lightning design when he vented each tank separately out near the wing tip. So maybe the Lightnings need two tennis balls - or two placards that say "No insects allowed." I also use a tennis ball over the pitot/static tube.

Buz,

Another great read .Actually that model is needed to travel with all of my dogs the second fuse will be used like the enclosed cab of the truck. We will be able to shuttle food and treats thru a tube in the center section.

Really. I love to see that guys are getting out and flying the Lighting around on trips as is was designed to do. My questions is where in the world can Peter go now I think he covered the whole continent.

As you may know Mark ahs become the new EAA 1326 chapter president here in Shelbyville. And along with has set out to do some really neat things, one of which is to do young eagles flight on the national young eagles day. I think this is a first for that chapter and will be doing them for sure in Lightning’s and Jabiru’s and any other planes we can find.

I couldn't agree more.  Some of the best newsletter articles are by Lightning pilots who have shared their trips and photos with the newsletter readers like Peter Mitchell did in the March issue. Some other guys that come to mind are Gary Pennington (around Arizona), Dick Cleavinger (Colorado), and of course who could forget that Navy guy, Earl Ferguson and his world record trip across the US.  So all of you, get out there, fly your Lightning and then send me some words and photos about your exploits. Heck it doesn't even have to be a long trip - just around your local area would be interesting reading. Some of the best stories I have heard are when you land at local airports and the reaction of other pilots when they see your beautiful Lightning. So tell us about those $50 dollar hamburger flights with some photos of your jet. Makes for interesting reading for the newsletter.

I agree, the time and effort that you invest in our news letter is an asset to the entire group. I am have gear farings installed on my Esqual-Lightning, which should be accomplished in about three weeks. I will send some updated photos, the results of our annual 100nm Spruce Creek race, and some other items. One of my best friends and neighbors (two taxiways away) has purchased a factory Lightning; so that will give us three Lightnings here at the Creek. Since more and more of us are aging, there will be additional Light Sport pilots. We are all ex-airshow pilots, so we plan to form a 3-5 plane demo team here. There are around 600 planes stationed here, and the Lightning seems to be the preferred plane. A German Company is also building a Light Sport factory here called "MySky". I allowed their test pilot to fly my plane, and he came back with about 6-7 changes for them to re-engineer their design.

Right on, that is what I like to know is how are Builders/pilots Really using the airplane for.
We really wanted it to be a economical fun cross country plane, and the travel logs really show that.

Keep em coming guys we all like to see where your going.

Also excellent idea from “The Bear” on the trickle charging jack, that is a great way to do it.

One example is the wing. Unless they have recently changed the rectangular one they were showing at Oshkosh, it is going to be slower than it could be if they would just change to a tapered design.  And that would look much better also.

We stopped by their display at Sebrieng (actually gave them a hand, their bird was parked on the turf and it took some effort to get it back onto the pavement) - same wing as before.
