There should be a plate on the firewall with date of manufacture stamped
on it mine is near start valve I think they are all rivered there my cj
was made 1969 and it is spot welded and my mates is a 1983 model and I
think it is welded as well but I would have to check both ours came out

Hi Pete;

What is the serial number of your CJ? Of the four I imported from
China in 1994 two were from batch 15 (dated Dec 65 and Jan 66), one
from batch 24 (dated 1968) and one from batch 25 (dated 1969).
Only the 1969 model was spot welded. All four were produced by
factory #320

The first two digits of the serial no.is the batch number which will
give an indication of when it was manufactured.

Hey Doug, I'm sure you could shed some light on this subject. When
did spot welding of CJ fuselage skins start and end?

Walt

A number of issues of RedAlert a go, I published a list of all the serial numbers of CJ-6s. Along with date of manufacture It included those that went to other countries.

The numbers which I got from importer Jack Wang, listed the batch number and the number of airplanes in that batch. Your serial number will show what number your airplane was in that batch. The factory number will be the middle 3 digits IF there is a 7 digit number on the firewall. I have seen just 4 digits on a couple of airplanes. Its interesting to note IF you compare the number of airplanes in a batch with the number of months in which that batch was built, a CJ was coming off the production line about every 3 days.

The serial number on mine indicates a 1969 batch. The fuselage is spot welded. It was well done and shows no corrosion problems even now.

I have always considered the workmen ship on these airplanes to be very good. Some of the later ones though OK, showed signs that the work force didn't have the experience of a practiced production line worker.  This was true of US aircraft too.

Walt and all,From my experience it's kind of a mixed bag and so it is very difficult to be real sure.  In 1969 they tried to spot weld the fuse and the tail cone.  I have been told this only lasted for one year, but I have seen 1970 year aircraft which were both ways, some spot welded, some riveted.  I can only assume that they had fuselages left over from 69 and used them up.  Since fuselages and tail cones are not built in one place together but are mated later, this would account for some later year mod aircraft having spot welded tail cones but fully riveted fuselages.  The year of mfg only indicates the year when all the pieces finally became a aircraft, the individual parts may be from as much as several years previous.

It has not been my experience that spot welding caused corrosion, don't know where this tale got started, but I have not found it to be true.
Best,
Doug

Hi All,
I believe mine was a 68 purchased from Walt, it was spot welded on fuselage and wings on stringers only not on spars, formers or bulkheads. I never had any issues with the welds. Sold it about 2002 to Ron Lee.
Best regards,
David

Thanks for all the responses. Now that I realize that the side panels are spot-welded to the stringers, the "dents" make much more sense as the natural distortion that would be caused by spot-welding that large of a panel of aluminum to that many stringers.

If anyone has access to the serial number article, can you confirm that mine's a 1966?

You can find the entire list in the Spring issue 2007 of RedAlert.

Between Sept 1965 and May 1967, 6 batches of CJ were built.  Each batch contained 50 aircraft. The batch numbers started with #13 though #18. 4 aircraft in those batches (15-40 &41 and 17-49&50) went to the Cambodian airforce. The rest were sent to the PLAF.
The first 2 digests in your number is the batch number.

Hope that helps.

Interesting, since mine starts with 18 is it then actually a 1967 plane? (Don't have access to 07 magazines since I joined this year).

Pete,
You should still be able to go onto the RPA website and get the digital
magazine in archives. Click on Red Alert and then archived copies. It goes
all the way back to spring 2007.

Thanks, found it!

Looks like batch 18 was from October-1966 through May 1967 and mine was A/C number 39 out of 50 in the batch so might have been a 1967 but is listed as a 1966 in the paperwork.
