				It was a great flight to northern Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan last week. We flew to Land O Lakes airport which had both grass and paved airstrips. The airport manager helped fuel the Kolbra and loved talking to us. We walked a few hundred feet into town and had lunch and an ice cream cone. What a cute little town. After lunch, we decided to fly across upper Michigan to Ontonagon on Lake Superior. We flew over the Porcupine Mountains and landed (see pics). There wasn't anyone around and Laurie had to use the restroom. We tried to get into the pilot lounge and the access code said, "squawk VFR". I looked around and couldn't find the code. We looked in the airport directories and on the bulletin board with no luck. Finally I walked out to the Kolbra and switched on the transponder and read "1200". I went back to the lounge and got in. That was a relief!
  
 We walked for 3 miles into town and Laurie spotted a transit station. We walked in and got a ride on a bus. The town was pretty cool and Ontonagon has a lot of sandy beaches. The bus took us back to the airport and we flew to Phillips 93 miles. On Saturday the forecasters were saying heavy storms later that evening. I decided to go and check the Kolbra to make sure it was secure. This certainly paid off as I lay awake that night as the lightning, winds, and rain pounded against the window. I thought I would see the Kolbra wrapped up in a ball on Sunday morning. Well, the tiedowns held and it was by far the worst storm it has ever seen. It dropped 4" of rain and the creeks and drains were running fast. I was hoping for better weather on Monday and I got my wish. I had the most wonderful flight home and it was smooth as silk.
   
 We had a great time flying and seeing new airports. I would like to return to Ontonagon on the Goldwing this fall.

 Beautiful area to fly.  I came through there in 1994, then again in  2003 
 when John Williamson and I flew the south shore of Lake Superior.  What a 
 ride.
 
 Great to see another Kolber get out there and do it, away from the traffic

				You guys!  Please stop!  I won't be able to sleep all night thinking about 
 little bitty airplanes flying somewhere other than over an airport or 
 hundreds of miles of flat fields.  I can only imagine what your instructor 
 would do if he/she knew........
 Seriously, great photos and I'm would love to make the trip.  I'm flying a 
 little every day and after I whip this cancer, my poor little KXP is going 
 to have to earn her keep and get some miles behind her.  Even though I'm not 
 strong enough for long trips, I want everyone to rest assured that all enemy 
 shipping has been bombed and strafed from the Tennessee River.  What am I 
 going to do if I get shot down (engine out)?  Put her as close to shore as 
 possible, wade/swim ashore and walk (watching for snakes every foot of the 
 way).

				Gene, You can come across Arkansas, through the north eastern corner of Oklahoma and just a little north east of Arkansas City, KS and have some pretty remote flying for you and the KXP. Be great to meet you.

 Thom, I considered getting a Slingshot years ago. It's only in the last two years that that Mark was selling the Kolbra and I found a way to finance it. Flying the Kolbra is very similar to any other Kolb aircraft until a passenger is aboard, then it becomes a very different machine to fly. I like the 912 (of course) and it makes it possible to fly over terrain that I wouldn't fly in my 2-stroke Firestar.
 
 One thing that I've thought about lately is the reliability of the 912 is only as good as the hoses and clamps that are on it. Do you remember that nick in my radiator hose? Well Mark and I replaced that hose before I left. I also went over all the clamps on the engine to make sure they were all tight. A friend of mine lost the coolant in his 912 due to a chafing radiator hose. He was heading to Idaho from here and had to land 11 miles into his trip. Lucky for him that it didn't happen while over the mountains.

				A friend of mine lost the coolant in his 912 due to a chafing radiator 
 hose. He was heading to Idaho from here and had to land 11 miles into his 
 trip. Lucky for him that it didn't happen while over the mountains.
 
 
 Ralph/Gang:
 
 The 912 series engines are primarily oil cooled.
 
 Eric Tucker told me a 912 engine was run 2.0 hours with no coolant.
 
 Should a 912 loose coolant, reduce power, and proceed to the nearest airport 
 to make repairs.  Monitor engine oil temp to keep it in the green.

 I haven't checked the manual for the 912, but I think it can run for about an hour without coolant. The max CHT (I think) is 330F. My buddy's CHT was at 300F and he said there was no engine damage. I wouldn't want to be miles from nowhere without coolant.
 
 It's a good idea to check all clamps and hoses anyway ...

 Only a fool would not keep his equipment up to snuff.  I agree one should 
 check their "clamps and hoses" frequently.
 
 My comment was to let folks know they did not need to shut the engine down 
 and take a risk of wrecking their aircraft and themselves if they lost 
 coolant.
 
 I would think if I could keep the eng oil and CH temps in the green, I could 
 fly as long as necessary to make a safe landing somewhere without fear of 
 damaging the 912 in the process.

				Ralph, Knowing the allowable emergency operating parameters for the 912 with a coolant loss is fairly important, especially if you're flying an S-LSA. After a loss of coolant (LOC) incident, the heads should be Rockwell hardness inspected for annealing of the heat treatment. If they test soft, the heads must be replaced (S-LSA) which at current prices is a $12,000+ bill for parts + labor. Almost better to just get a new engine, which is why I'm always suspicious of used 912's. Before someone writes in asking where Rick gets his crazy ideas, please review the Line Maintenance Manual, Section 5-50-00, page 11 and Heavy Maintenance Manual Section 72-00-00, pages 55 to 74.
