Its been five years on our 914 so we're looking at changing hoses. We'd like suggestions from those that have done this on how to do it efficiently and without making a huge mess. Access to the water pump hoses seems difficult with the exhaust system in place (muffler lies under the engine).

I removed the exhaust and replaced the oil hoses at the same time. I
used silcon hoses for the water hoses its only been 11 months but so
far they seem very good no weeps at all.

Hi Jim,
Definitely drop the muffler out! That will give you a clean shot at the
four radiator hoses. It will also allow a close inspection of the radiator
and the radiator springs.

Hi Jim & Heather,
I'd proceed on the basis that you will make a huge mess as soon as
you unhook the coolant hose.
A kid's wading pool or similar would be useful for catching the
fluid, which in my experience goes everywhere that you don't have a
bucket placed !

Jim,
You can avoid the mess by syphoning the coolant. Push a small plastic tube all the way down to the radiator for this.
