Kolb flyers,

My latest project has been to finish my MkIII's seats.  I thought about building those
Rans seats, but decided to stay with the original sling seats.

The main reason I considered a non-stock seat is because I DO NOT want to sit so
low!!
However, after wrangling with the idea, I decided to just re-install the OEM sling seats, and
see what you Kolb pilot guys say.
I secured my sling seats as per plans today.......with the mid-point of the sling secured to
the cross tube under the seat (like the plans show).

Here's my question;  Do you sit really low in your plane directly on your sling seats, or do you
build up the height with lots of cushion, so you can sit up a little?
Is there anybody that builds up the seat with lots of cushion?  Do you find that you NEED lots of
cushion to raise you up, or is the height of just the sling an ok height?

Mike W/Gang:

I built my seat to suit me.

If I had to do it again, I'd do it the same way:

-Get in the airplane.

-See how the seats feel.

-If too low, put a cushion under my butt.

-Too far to the rear, put a cushion behind me.

When are you going to fly the MKIII?

You may be flying before I fly again. Still waiting on a BFR, but may wait
until I get back from my road trek West before I get one. I still can not
push my plane in and out of the hanger.

John, Kolb guys,

Now that I have the sling seats reinstalled, I have something to
test what feels okay.  I suspect plenty of cushion.

Getting in and out is quite a chore, at least it is for me.  That's one of the
reasons why I don't want to sit so low.

Regarding finishing the plane;   I kind of gave up trying to predict a completion date,
'cause I've had so many things keep me from finishing it.  I like to think I can get
it registered this winter or so.  At least, that's the plan.

The biggest challenge for me to finish the MkIII is to complete the cabin,
i.e. the instruments, ballistic chute install, new wing gap (since old one doesn't
work anymore), interior stuff, etc.

Mike, I like the low seating, I just fold a towel and put it over the lower tube for a bit of padding and go fly.

I like the seat height as is. I have a sheep skin cover on the seats and nothing else. When I first started flying the Kolb I thought the seats were too low when taxi ing , I am now used to them and see no reason to change. I am a bit on the short side at 5'7 so maybe that helps. The only problem I have ever had was the ties holding the top of the seat broke on 1 side , that was a uncomfortable ride home. I changed the ties to some more robust ones and check these as part of the pre flight and always carry some spares . I have never had to use them . The seats are just right in flight . Since I did not build my Kolb I am only assuming the seats are per the plans

I know how you feel because I cannot push my plane into the hangar without help, because it is uphill. But this pulley and track setup works great. I need the track because the hangar is built on a slight slope, and not only does it slope toward the front, it also slopes toward the side. So without the track to guide the tailwheel, the airplane tries to crawl sideways when you winch it in. You may not need that.

When I taxi in, I spin the tail around before shut down so that all I need to do is attach the yoke to the tailwheel, then I stick a BIG screwdriver (2 handed pull) through a loop in the end of the rope and just start walking backward away from the hangar. When I get it pulled all the way in, the tailwheel drops off the end of the ramp - then I know it's time to quit.

Maybe you can adapt something like this to your situation. It makes it possible to get the airplane put away single handed.

Don't have any ideas about how to get it out tho - Make a towbar and use the tractor?

Richard P/Gang:

Looks like that works good for you.

I have always had ramps for mains and tailwheel in my hanger, which was
built for a FS, not a MKIII.

By the time I get back from my trek West, I should be healed enough to pull
all the old ramps out, regrade the hanger floor and hanger approach so they
are level, then build new ramps. Right now I still have to push up hill
somewhat to get the airplane out.

Thanks for the info.

the sling seats at least for me were just bad, had to have foam just to survive,,, then an hour or so was my limit. when I rebuilt I put in some seats from a piper tomahawk,,, best mod I have ever done.

John, Harbor Freight has some cheap 12V winched that with a couple of strategically placed stakes, could be used to pull your Kolb in and out of the hangar. My neighbor John does this with hie Bellanca Viking. The winch pulls nice and slow so minor track changes are easy to make as the plane is being pulled in or out. Might help you get back into the air sooner. Kolb therapy is the best medicine I'm finding.

Good luck,
Rick Girard
