I have question for all you 912 Guys and Gals, regarding a problem I had this past weekend.

After a seemingly normal flight, I was on the ground and stopped, and went to shut down my engine.
I flipped both ignition switches to “off,” but nothing happened – the engine continued to idle.
Had to close off the fuel valve to stop the engine.

I checked the wire connections on each of the kill switches (2) and on each of the ignition modules (2), and they all are secure.

Any suggestions on what else to look at or troubleshoot?

Many thanks –

Either your "ground" is missing to the key switch or the switch itself is bad.

Dennis, I had the same problem on the Kolbra only with one mag staying hot. It continued to run after I switched it off. I have a rotary ignition switch instead of toggles. I found one of the switch wipers wasn't making good enough contact inside, so I took the switch apart and extended the springs. It solved the problem for a year.

The last few weeks, I noticed the problem returned. I took my trusty ohmmeter and saw that both mags were being grounded like they are supposed to on the airframe side of the engine connector. I reseated the connector several times, and that did the trick. It may have been the original problem in the first place. When the connector was jostled around, it made contact making me think it was the ignition switch problem. So, the bottom line is to check the connector between the engine and airframe to make sure it isn't corroded and all connections are good. I hope this solves your problem.

I should have read your post better, but still- the ground to the
switches is missing. It is possible that one of the switches is "open", but if
that were the case you should notice a slight decrease in your idle speed

Probably bad ground to your switches.

Boyd / Howard S / Ralph B / Tom L –

Thanks for your replies - good advice, to begin looking into my ignition problem.

Your suggestions are all in line with my thinking – namely, that I have a grounding problem somewhere in the ignition system. Will begin investigating, and reply back when I discover the exact cause.

This List is great – just the kind of input I was hoping for!

Dennis K/Gang:

Many years ago I was flying my MKIII, 912UL powered, to Florida, at night (don't do it any more). Had to relieve myself somewhere in Alabama or Georgia. Nearest airport, landed, but could only shut down one side of the ignition.

Further investigation determined a broken ground wire on one side of the ignition box. However, it was not a visible break, but the wire strands had corroded inside the insulation to the point they failed. Had about a 1/2 inch of copper to work with, but was able to solder a wire to that stub and save the ign module.
